I 1 If the Contracting Agency uses a nuclear density gauge to determine density the test 2 procedures FOP for WAQTC TM 8 and WSDOT SOP T 729 will be used on the day the I 3 mix is placed and prior to opening to traffic. 4 5 Roadway cores for density may be obtained by either the Contracting Agency or the I 6 Contractor in accordance with WSDOT SOP 734. The core diameter shall be 4-inches 7 minimum, unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. Roadway cores will be tested by 8 the Contracting Agency in accordance with WSDOT FOP for AASHTO T 166. I 9 10 If the Contract includes the Bid item "Roadway Core" the cores shall be obtained by the I 11 Contractor in the presence of the Engineer on the same day the mix is placed and at 12 locations designated by the Engineer. If the Contract does not include the Bid item 13 "Roadway Core" the Contracting Agency will obtain the cores. 14 1 15 For a lot in progress with a CPF less than 0.75, a new lot will begin at the Contractor's 16 request after the Engineer is satisfied that material conforming to the Specifications can I 17 be produced. 18 19 HMA mixture accepted by commercial evaluation and HMA constructed under conditions I 20 other than those listed above shall be compacted on the basis of a test point evaluation 21 of the compaction train. The test point evaluation shall be performed in accordance with 22 instructions from the Engineer. The number of passes with an approved compaction 23 train, required to attain the maximum test point density, shall be used on all subsequent 24 paving. 25 I 26 HMA for preleveling shall be thoroughly compacted. HMA that is used for preleveling 27 wheel rutting shall be compacted with a pneumatic tire roller unless otherwise approved 28 by the Engineer. I 29 30 Test Results 31 For a sublot that has been tested with a nuclear density gauge that did not meet the 32 minimum of 91 percent of the reference maximum density in a compaction lot with a CPF 33 below 1.00 and thus subject to a price reduction or rejection, the Contractor may request 34 that a core be used for determination of the relative density of the sublot. The relative I 35 density of the core will replace the relative density determined by the nuclear density 36 gauge for the sublot and will be used for calculation of the CPF and acceptance of HMA 37 compaction lot. I 38 39 When cores are taken by the Contracting Agency at the request of the Contractor, they 40 shall be requested by noon of the next workday after the test results for the sublot have 41 been provided or made available to the Contractor. Core locations shall be outside of 42 wheel paths and as determined by the Engineer. Traffic control shall be provided by the 43 Contractor as requested by the Engineer. Failure by the Contractor to provide the I 44 requested traffic control will result in forfeiture of the request for cores. When the CPF for 45 the lot based on the results of the HMA cores is less than 1.00, the cost for the coring will 46 be deducted from any monies due or that may become due the Contractor under the I 47 Contract at the rate of$200 per core and the Contractor shall pay for the cost of the 48 traffic control.
