GeoTest Services, Inc.—Revision 1 April 10,2020
Kikuchi Retaining Wall, Everett,Washington Project No.20-0344
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF SERVICES
The purpose of this evaluation is to establish general subsurface conditions beneath the site from
which conclusions and recommendations pertaining to the project design can be formulated. Our
scope of services includes the following tasks:
• Explore soil and groundwater conditions underlying the site by advancing three
exploration test pits and four Dynamic Cone Penetrometer(DCP)tests.
• Perform laboratory testing on representative samples to classify and evaluate the
engineering characteristics of the soils encountered.
• Provide a written report containing a description of subsurface conditions and exploration
logs. The findings and recommendations in this report pertain to the geotechnical
parameters in order to assist the structural engineer in the design of a cast-in-place
retaining wall.
• Assess Geologically Hazardous Areas (if present) per Everett Municipal Code.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The subject property (Parcel No. 00583978301402) consists of four lots located within an
established residential neighborhood in the City of Everett. An existing single-family residence is
located on the upper, southern half the of the subject property and the lower, northern half of
the subject property is currently undeveloped. A moderately steep, northern-to northwestern-
facing slope, with approximately 20 to 25 vertical feet of elevation differential separates the
upper half of the property from the lower half.
During an initial site visit, GeoTest was shown two locations on the lower portion of the site
where retaining walls will likely be needed. The first location would be an east-west trending wall
at the toe of the slope. Currently, a three- to five-foot tall bulkhead consisting of timber "dead
man" anchors extends into the slope. The bulkhead appears to be decaying and in need of
replacement. The second location will require a north-south running wall along the western
boundary of the subject property. At present, about six to ten feet of vertical separation exists
between the subject property and the adjacent neighboring residential property. GeoTest
anticipates that a retaining wall, six to nine vertical feet in height will be needed at the second
location.
Our current scope of services excludes infiltration feasibility. Our services are restricted to
considerations for new retaining wall/s and a review of municipal code with respect to
construction adjacent to an existing steep slope.
1
