Revised 05/01/2016 <br />Equipment Maintenance <br />When maintenance is performed on fixed systems, all work in the space will stop <br />and personnel will evacuate the space for the duration of the maintenance. <br />Fire Watch Policy <br />A fire watch is generally assigned for all hot work operations performed on <br />vessels. Fire watch personnel may not be assigned other duties while the hot <br />work is in progress. No more than four workers performing hotwork may be <br />attended by a single fire watch. <br />Fire Watch Duties <br />1. Be present continuously during hot work operations to watch for fire and <br />operate fire- extinguishing equipment to extinguish spot fires. <br />2. Remain in the hotwork area foratl?ast 30 minutes afterthe completion or <br />interruption of hot workto detectand extinguish smoldering fires. <br />3. Maintain a clear view of and immediate access to all areas included in the fire watch. <br />4. Communicate with workers exposed to hot work as necessary. <br />5. Stop work as necessary and restore safe conditions as necessary within hot work area. <br />6. Extinguish any incipient stage fires in the hotwork area that are within the <br />capability of available equipment and training. <br />7. Alert employees of any fire beyond the incipient stage. <br />8. If unable to extinguish afire, activate the alarm. <br />Equipment <br />Each fire watch will be assigned a fire extinguisher with ratings appropriate to <br />potential combustibles. A charged garden orfire hose may be kept ready when <br />necessary. <br />PPE Required <br />Safety glasses with side protectors or goggles will be available for each fire <br />watch and are required to be worn when the possibly of eye injury from sparks <br />orflying particles exists. <br />Training <br />Fire watches must be trained inthe following: <br />1. The basics of fire behavior, the different classes of fire and of extinguishing <br />agents,the stages of fire, and methods for extinguishing fires; <br />2. How to detect fires in hot work areas; <br />3. The activation and operation of fixed and portable fire protection systems they <br />will be expected to use; this should include extinguishing live fires whenever <br />allowed by local and federal law; <br />4. The recognition of the adverse health effects that may be caused by exposure to fire; <br />5. The physical characteristics of the hot work area; <br />
