Revised 05/01/2016
An additional 1 °/d' must also be laid out and connected, however it does not need to be charged
unless required bythe Marine Chemist.
Maintenance of Safe Conditions
Pipelines that could carry hazardous materials into spaces that have been certified "Safe for
Workers" or "Safe for Hot Work" will be disconnected, blanked off, or otherwise blocked by a
positive method to prevent hazardous materials from being discharged into the space.
When a change that could alter conditions within a tested confined or enclosed space or other
dangerous atmosphere occurs, work in the affected space or area shall be stopped. Work may not
be resumed until the affected space or area isvisually inspected and retested and found to
comply.
Housekeeping in Hot Work Areas
1. Ensure that all combustible materials (construction debris, paper, foam dust and pieces,
cardboard, wood, oily rags, paint rags, plastic, etc.) are removed from the area impacted by
the hotwork.
2. Escape routes from the hot work areas must be kept clear of obstructions and trip hazards.
3. Portable flammable and combustiIJ9 liquid containers should be removed from the vessel
whenever practical.
4. Hot work may not occur withi n 200 feet of use or transfer of flammable liquids, or 50 feet if a
fully -closed intervening barrierexists
5. Flammable liquids and compressed gas cylinders except those being used for welding must be
removed from the vessel while hot work is conducted in insulated cargo holds.
Fire Response
The local fire department is generally used to fight all fires beyond the incipient stage. They will be
notified via 911. The vessel owner or the shipyard is the liaison between the vessel and the fire
department.
Equipment
Many vessels have smoke detectors,and/or heat detector installed onboard. These may sound an
alarm locally, or be hardwired and trigger a remote alarm system. When any person is alerted to a
fire, that person is responsible for activating a pull station, or in some other way spreading the
alarm. Fire alarm pull station locations, or general alarm activators, are typically indicated on
posted Fire and Safety Arrangement drawings.
Machinery spaces may be protected by fixed fire extinguishing systems. These systems flood
individually covered spaces with either Halon or carbon dioxide. Warning signs are posted at the
entrances to, and inside protected spaces. Covered spaces must be evacuated and sealed prior
to the activation of any fixed system. An alarm sounds for only 20 seconds after activation and
prior to release of the extinguishing agent. Any persons remaining in the space during activation
of the fixed system could be killed.
All exits from spaces where fixed systems are installed must be operational, unlocked, and
accessible whenever people are inside the space.
