aCiGeminus Boeing Project Contract No.EVE-16-2929
Technology Development CEI Project No. 160731
3.2.4 Airflow Only CFD/Measurements Comparison
Direct & precise point by point comparison of velocity values from CFD simulations and the
TAB report is not technically possible due to the lack of sufficiently detailed positional accuracy
of the measurements around the aircraft, regions of high velocity gradients, and the inherent
spatial averaging of the VelGrid velocity instrument. The precise location (i.e. center of the
VelGrid) of where velocity measurements were taken was unknown with only the rough location
drawings and report description available to approximate where to retrieve data from the CFD
solutions. Thus there is expected to be a high degree of experiment scatter and deviation from
the CFD. Figure 22 shows the locations where velocity values were taken from the CFD
simulations.
For measurement locations like the engine, wing LE/TE, and horizontal stabilizer LE/TE
small variations in measurement position will read significantly different velocity numbers.
Measurements along the vertical tail were not considered due to the complete lack of clarity on
where the velocity measurements were taken and the large degree of flow variation in that area.
33
