3
installation of sprinkler system modifications are to meet the requirements of NFPA 13 (2016) and the Washington
State Building Code (2018) as adopted by the City of Everett.
3.o General Fire Sprinkler System Project Requirements
The following notes are intended to provide minimum criteria for the fire sprinkler system modifications.
1. Design drawings shall be prepared by the contractor and shall demonstrate the configuration of major system
components including sprinkler piping and sprinkler locations. Drawings shall indicate the location of existing
sprinkler system equipment and where the existing system is to be connected with new sprinkler system
equipment. The sprinkler contractor shall field verify locations of all sprinklers and system piping shown on the
automatic sprinkler system record drawings provided separately as part of the project information (As -Built
drawings dated February 9, 1994, prepared by Smith Fire Systems, Inc).
2. The contractor shall prepare and submit shop drawings to the owner for approval prior to the start of any work.
If any changes are made to the location of sprinkler from those shown on the owner -approved shop drawings,
those changes shall be approved by the owner and identified in writing to the Everett Fire Department and
submitted for approval by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction. All changes shall be approved in writing prior
to installation. Any relocations or additional sprinklers required for compliance as a result of the changes shall
be furnished and installed at the expense of the contractor.
3. The contractor shall be responsible for verifying and installing a code compliant system regardless of whether
owner approval and/or Authority Having Jurisdiction approval is granted.
4. Refer to the Jensen Hughes hydraulic calculation memo and associated hydraulic calculations for water
supply information and conceptual design criteria based on the anticipated hazardous classification and use.
5. Accuracy of wall locations and dimensions shall be field verified by the contractor with regards to pipe routing
and proximity to obstructions.
6. The scope of work includes the modification of the existing sprinkler system to accommodate architectural,
temporary occupancy, and hazard classification changes due to the Connect UP project. The sprinkler
contractor shall be responsible for coordinating with new elements being added to the building as part of the
overall project such as new light fixtures, fixed elements, suspended ceilings, etc.
7. All sprinkler piping shall be secured using UL listed and FM approved (UL/FM) pipe hangers, anchors, seismic
bracing, and other approved means to properly secure the pipe.
8. All piping 1-inch through 2-inch shall be UL/FM ASTM A53, A135, or A795 or A795 schedule 40 with threaded
ends.
9. All wet -system piping 2%-inch and larger shall be UL/FM ASTM A53, A135, or A795 schedule 10 with rolled -
grooved ends.
10. The work includes all sprinklers, listed schedule 10 and 40 piping, hangers, seismic bracing, and other
associated components throughout the building related to the modification of the existing fire sprinkler system.
11. Where flexible sprinkler drops are used, the friction loss for the flexible sprinkler drop shall be provided by and
verified by the Contractor.
12. Sprinklers shall be installed in the symmetrical two foot by two foot center of ceiling tiles where applicable.
13. All additional materials, fittings, and other associated equipment required to provide a complete operational
system shall be shown on the contractor shop drawings. These fittings shall be incorporated into the finalized
hydraulic calculations. A 10 psi pressure cushion will be assumed in all hydraulic calculations, applied to the
static and residual pressure information provided by the City of Everett Public Works Department.
14. The work includes connection of water flow and valve supervisory switches to the fire alarm system. The
contractor shall be responsible to coordinate these wiring connections with a licensed fire alarm technician
and/or electrician.
15. The work includes coordination of all obstructions to new sprinkler piping. Obstructions include but are not
limited to emergency lighting, battery boxes, telecom equipment, and wiring. Sprinkler contractor is to
coordinate with the Architect and Owner, and the Connect UP architectural drawings prior to finalizing shop -
level sprinkler drawings.
16. The work includes related modifications of drain piping, inspector's test connections, drain valves, and piping
as necessary to complete the modification work. The drains shall be piped directly to the outside of the
building to an approved location by the Architect.
17. The work includes necessary modifications to the existing sprinkler zone control assemblies for each level of
the building(s). The control assemblies shall include an indicating control valve, riser check valve with trim,
Page 2 of 3 1 April 11, 2022 jensenhughes.com
