Drywall and insulation are not exempt underthe building code from permits. These can have specific
performance requirements under the code, including fire safety for the drywall. Technically windows
and doors also require permits asthey are similarly not exempt, but we optto not require permits for
this work. Note that windows and doors can also have performance and safety issues that the owner is
responsible to determine and implement.
Drew Martin, P.E., S.E.
Associate Engineer —Commercial Plans Examiner I Permit Services
425.257.8810 1 3200 Cedar Street, 2otl Floor, Everett, WA 98201
Phone Hours: M/W/T: 8 am - 12 pm & 1 pm —3 pm; Tu: 1:00pm-3:00pm
everettwa.gov/permits I Facebook I Twitter
Note: Emails and attachments sent to and from the City of Everett are public records and maybe subject to disclosure pursuant
to the Public Records Act.
From: SCOTT SELFRIDGE <scott selfridge(Elmsn.com>
Sent: Wednesday, June 29, 2022 8:53 PM
To: Cindy Bergsma <CBergsma(nleverettwa.gov>; Drew Martin <dmartin(nleverettwa.gov>
Subject: [EXTERNAL] RE: W2206-012 344 VIEW RIDGE DR
CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the organization. Do I
write it in under "other"?
Also, I want to be clear that the garage is not heated. There's no heater. The
insulation got replaced since the old stuff was in poor condition. The drywall was
also replaced in areas where we called in for the electrical inspection along with
other drywall that was in need of repair. It is my understanding that repair and
replacement of surface finishes and insulation do not require a building permit.
Otherwise, every time someone does an electrical repair, there would be a
building permit requirement in addition to the electrical permit requirement.
Which requirement are you referencing that says I need a building permit for
replacing the finishes or insulation? Regarding the garage door, the old one was
damaged, so we removed it and put a new one in. There's no structural change or
furring. Are homeowners usually required to get a building permit to replace a
damaged door? I'd like to get my electrical inspection moving along, so please let
me know how I can do that. None of the other repairs seem to require a building
