Fail Safe Operation Requirements <br />In the event of a power failure, including battery back-up, the gate(s) shall automatically open, by spring <br />tension or other non -electrical method, or the gate must be capable of being pushed open without <br />additional steps having to be performed. <br />Manually (Non -Automatic) Operated Gates <br />All manually operated gates shall be designed to remain in the open position when left unattended. <br />Manual locking mechanisms, such as padlocks, shall be Knox brand only. <br />Manual gates are subject to the same opening width and plan approval process as automatic gates. <br />Manual gates shall be provided with an approved method for emergency access. Approved methods shall <br />consist of one of the following: <br />• High security padlock (Knox Brand) Keyed to EFD <br />emergency access keyway, or <br />• Installation of a Knox rapid access key box <br />containing the gate key. <br />o If a key box is used, it shall be installed on <br />a gate support pillar or post adjacent to <br />the gate. The box must be visible to <br />anyone approaching the gate at all <br />times. <br />Note: Chain gates or cable gates are not approved <br />methods to gate a fire access roadway. <br />Gates Serving Residential Dwellings. <br />Entry gates located across private driveways serving less than three residences shall comply with the <br />following: <br />• When one or more of the dwellings or residential lots is farther than 150 feet from the public <br />roadway. The gate shall be at the width of not less than the required driveway width approved <br />for the project. <br />Serving Three or More Dwellings <br />Gates located across private driveways serving three or more dwellings are required to comply with all <br />provisions found in this document including gate width and gate operations. <br />Fire Marshal's Office 425.257.8120 1 everettwa.gov/fire INFORMATION HANDOUT A-3 14.22.2021 1 Page 2 <br />
