Edgewater Creek Bridge Replacement November 2023 118 Repair or replace any metal castings and other surface improvements damaged by 1 planing, as determined by the Engineer. 2 3 A tapered wedge cut must be planed longitudinally along curb lines sufficient to provide a 4 minimum of 4 inches of curb reveal after placement and compaction of the final wearing 5 course. The dimensions of the wedge must be as shown on the Drawings or as specified 6 by the Engineer. 7 8 A tapered wedge cut must also be made at transitions to adjoining pavement surfaces 9 (meet lines) where butt joints are shown on the Drawings. Cut butt joints in a straight line 10 with vertical faces 2 inches or more in height, producing a smooth transition to the 11 existing adjoining pavement. 12 13 After planing is complete, planed surfaces must be swept, cleaned, and if required by the 14 Contract, patched and preleveled. 15 16 The Engineer may direct additional depth planing. Before performing this additional 17 depth planing, the Contractor must conduct a hidden metal in pavement detection survey 18 as specified in Section 5-04.3(14)A. 19 20 5-04.3(14)A Pre-Planing Metal Detection Check 21 Before starting planing of pavements, and before any additional depth planing required 22 by the Engineer, the Contractor must conduct a physical survey of existing pavement to 23 be planed with equipment that can identify hidden metal objects. 24 25 Should such metal be identified, promptly notify the Engineer. 26 27 See Section 1-07.16(1) regarding the protection of survey monumentation that may be 28 hidden in pavement. 29 30 The Contractor is solely responsible for any damage to equipment resulting from the 31 Contractor’s failure to conduct a pre-planing metal detection survey, or from the 32 Contractor’s failure to notify the Engineer of any hidden metal that is detected. 33 34 5-04.3(14)B Paving and Planing Under Traffic 35 36 5-04.3(14)B1 General 37 In addition the requirements of Section 1-07.23 and the traffic controls required in 38 Section 1-10, and unless the Contract specifies otherwise or the Engineer approves, the 39 Contractor must comply with the following: 40 41 1. Intersections: 42 a. Keep intersections open to traffic at all times, except when paving or planing 43 operations through an intersection requires closure. Such closure must be kept 44 to the minimum time required to place and compact the HMA mixture, or plane 45 as appropriate. For paving, schedule such closure to individual lanes or portions 46
