CITY OF EVERETT SPECIAL PROVISIONS <br /> <br />3rd Ave Water Quality Facility Division 7 – STORM, SEWER, WATER September 12, 2024 <br />WO No. – UP 3775 SP – 186 <br />7-08.3(2) Laying Pipe <br />Supplement 7-08.3(2) by adding the following: <br />7-08.3(2)J High Density Polyethylene Pipe (HDPE) for Combined Sewer <br />(******) <br />Provide leak-proof thermal HDPE butt joints, except at field closures and other joint <br />connections specifically identified or approved by the Engineer. Butt weld HDPE <br />joints in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendation and ASTM D 2657. Use <br />tools recommended by the pipe supplier and approved by the Engineer to fuse <br />joints. Use pipe manufacturer trained and certified operators to operate the joint <br />fusing equipment. Provide fusing machine having hydraulic pressure control for <br />fusing two pipe ends together. Accurately trim ends of pipe to form perpendicular <br />faces prior to fusing. Provide electrically heated and thermostatically controlled <br />heating plate on the fusing machine with a temperature gauge for monitoring <br />temperature. Subject the heating plate to periodic inspection, using a temperature <br />stick, to assure even heating. Provide a HDPE flange adapter with a 316 stainless <br />steel follower ring having Class 125 flange bolt pattern where flanged connections <br />are required. <br />Provide joints between pipe sections free from sharp edges, ridges and depressions <br />on the inside. Internal projection beads do not need be removed from each pipe <br />joint, unless otherwise noted on the Plans. Provide true alignment at the butt-fused <br />joint between the joined pipes with uniform roll back beads resulting from the use <br />of proper temperature and pressure. Allow adequate cooling time before removing <br />pressure from the butt joint. The fused joint shall be watertight and shall have <br />tensile strength equal to the pipe. All joints shall be subject to inspection and <br />acceptance by the City. Cut out and replace all defective joints at no cost to the City. <br />City will not permit threaded or solvent – cement joints and connections. <br />City will not allow fabrication of fittings in the field. Sleeve couplings, repair bands, <br />mechanical joints, flanges and other types of pipe connections are not permitted <br />unless shown on the Plans or authorized in advance by the Engineer or Inspector. <br />Construct trench in accordance with 7-08.3(1)A. Place pipe in the trench in <br />accordance with 7-08.3(2)B and this section. Backfill in accordance with 7-08.3(3) <br />and these Special Provisions. When backfilling and compacting HDPE pipe, ensure <br />pipe is at the same temperature as the surrounding soil. Fill pipe with water and <br />anchor HDPE pipe to counteract buoyancy if flowable CDF is used for bedding or <br />backfill. City will not permit blocking under the pipe. <br />Provide continuous HDPE pipe entering manholes. City will not allow short PVC <br />closure segments, except where explicitly shown on the Plans or approved by the <br />Engineer. <br />7-08.3(3) Backfilling <br />Delete the first paragraph of 7-08.3(3) and substitute the following: <br />Perform trench backfilling only after inspection and approval of the installed pipe <br />bedding zone backfill. Refer to COE Standard Drawing No. 614, 615, 620 and the <br />Plans for typical trench section backfill and compaction requirements. <br />Trenches shall be backfilled with "Gravel Borrow" conforming to 9-03.14(1) of the <br />Standard Specifications. If excavated materials are demonstrated to meet the <br />requirements for Gravel Borrow they may be used as trench backfill. <br />If there is an excess of suitable backfill material obtained from trench excavation at <br />one location on the project, use it at other locations on the project or dispose of at <br />an approved disposal site. The cost of transporting the excess backfill material is <br />considered incidental to the Contract with no direct compensation made.
