The subject canopies are located at the Everett Marina
Building project in Everett, WA. One canopy is installed above the south entrance to the
building and the other above the east entrance. The inspection was performed according to
AWS D1.1 (2020), specifically focused on the contents in Table 8.1 (Visual Inspection
Acceptance Criteria).
KIE was provided drawings by Kingworks Structural Engineers for the design of the
canopies structures. The inspection was performed on the welded connections between the
L4x3xl/4 angle iron and the Hollow Structural Sections (HSS 8x6x3/16)used to form the
main structure of the canopies. Each canopy has an upper and lower HSS member. Each
member connects on both sides, top and bottom by the welded angle iron connection.
According to the design drawings, the angle iron was secured to the columns using A307
through bolts. According to the drawings all welded connections were to be 3/16" fillet
welds between the HSS members and the angle iron.
In addition to the welding inspection, KIE reviewed material documentation and
documentation provided by the erector/welder. The MTR's provided shows the angle iron
was multigrade ASTM A36,A529 Gr 50,A572 Gr50 ASTM A709 RG 36/50. The tubing
used states that it is ASTM A500 GR B/C. The welder stated that the manufacturers
recommendations were used for the welding and provided specifications and the welder is
WABO AWS D1.1 certified. The process was Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) with E71T
filler material used(AWS A5.20).All joints were stated to be fit up per AWS standards. No
11520 42"a Ave South•Tukwila,WA 98168•206-455-5121 •kentengineering.com
