Building Department , REVIEWER NAME. _Drew Martin
1
General
All designs appear to have been produced 5-6 years ago using
(applies to all)
non -IBC documents. It is not clear if any of the standard or
design procedures may have been superseded with more
current requirements or recommendations. The documents
should be revised as needed. The appropriate standard
editions should be specified.
2
All wall types should specify special inspection requirements
in the respective drawings. Inspection schedules should list
the type and frequency of each inspection required. The MSE
and rockery walls should specify geotechnical inspections per
IBC Table 1705.6. The soil nail walls should specify
geotechnical and structural inspections per IBC Tables 1705.3
and 1705.6; additional tests per Table 1705.7 should be
specified as applicable. Inspections and tests should also be
listed as required by the specified design standards used for
each wall.
3
The consideration of seismic surcharges in the soil nail wall
design was issued as a comment in April 2017; the response
indicated that is was not applicable. It is noted that IBC
Section 1803.5.12(1) requires seismic lateral earth pressures
to be considered concurrent with other soil pressures on
retaining walls; this section does not limit the types of
retaining walls required to comply with this loading. The
seismic loading should be considered for the design of all
walls, or commentary should be provided substantiating that
the loading is not required.
4
MSE Wall
Sheet W1 shows typical wall sections with an alternate
sloping toe condition and increased embedment depth of 24
inches. The minimum distance(s) and maximum slope(s) of
the toe cover should be specified. See also the TESC
construction drawings indicating steep toe slopes at multiple
locations.
