5
TESC Sheet D-1.3 shows Vault #3/#5 in close proximity behind
the walls and appears to prevent installation of the geogrid
reinforcement. The design in this area should be reviewed
and revised as needed.
6
Rockery Wall
Sheet W2 shows rockery sections for both cut and fill
conditions. It does not appear that the latter is used in this
project and should be removed.
7
The cut section indicates a maximum height of 16 feet, which
seems excessive except for heavily consolidated undisturbed
soils with high levels of internal cohesion (i.e., self-supporting
soils). The drawings should specify soil types that should be
present at the site to allow the construction of this wall. The
soils should be present over the entire height of the wall. The
drawing should include a note requiring verification of the soil
through special inspections by the geotechnical engineer -of -
record.
8
The cut section indicates a maximum height of 16 feet.
However, the elevations for the soil nail construction
drawings indicate retained heights that may exceed 16 feet.
In addition, it is not clear if the soil nail wall extends below
grade or is entirely above it, which may add another foot for
the required rockery embedment depth. The rockery design
should be reviewed and the extent reduced as needed.
9
TESC Sheet D-1.3 shows a "Storm Chamber System #1"
directly in front of the rockery. The design and depth of this
system is not clear. It is anticipated to extend at least several
below grade. It is not clear that this system has the capacity
to support surcharge loads from the rockery foundation
bearing loads, which would require the rockery to be
extended deeper into the soil and further increase the over -
height walls. This condition should be reviewed and the wall
design revised as needed.
10
Soil Nail Wall
The soil nail walls are flanked by rockery walls at each end.
See "Rockery Wall" Comment 3 above. The soil nail walls may
need to be extended.
