<br />19 <br /> <br />ARTICLE 8 - HOURS OF WORK AND WORKING CONDITIONS <br /> <br /> <br />Section 1: Original Appointment Probationary Period/Promotional Probationary Period <br /> <br />Newly hired employees shall be considered probationary employees for a period of six (6) months (or as <br />otherwise designated by the Civil Service Commission), subject to the following: <br /> <br />A. Said probationary period can be extended by the City for any time loss including protected leave <br />such as FMLA/WPFML usage, during the probationary period, up to the amount of actual time <br />lost. <br /> <br />B. If extenuating circumstances exist (other than set forth in A above), and the City provides the <br />Union with documented justification for extending a probationary period, said probationary <br />period can be extended for an additional thirty (30) calendar days. <br /> <br />C. During the probationary period, or extended probationary period, the City may discharge any <br />employee covered by this section of the Agreement at will, and such discharge shall not be <br />subject to the grievance and arbitration provisions of this Agreement. <br /> <br />Promotional Probationary Period <br /> <br />Promotional probationary period will act as a trial service period and shall be required following a <br />promotion or a transfer and shall be six (6) months in duration for promotion or lateral transfers subject to <br />the following: <br /> <br />A. An employee serving as a result of appointment through promotion who is unable to satisfactorily <br />perform the duties of the new position or who voluntarily requests to return to their former <br />position shall be reinstated in their former position or in one of like status and pay. <br /> <br />B. Promotional trial service period can be extended by the City for any time loss during the <br />probationary period, up to the amount of actual time lost. <br /> <br />Section 2: Work Schedules <br /> <br />The normal work week shall be forty (40) hours of work for all full-time employees to consist of <br />five (5) consecutive eight (8) hour work days. The Department Head, subject to the approval of <br />the Mayor, shall establish appropriate work shifts, specifying starting and ending times, lunch <br />periods, and scheduled days of rest. Alternate work schedules (i.e.: 9/80, 4/10) may be <br />established with mutual agreement between the Union and City pursuant to Article 8 Section 5. <br /> <br />A. The normal work week for full-time Library employees shall be forty (40) hours of work per <br />week. The Library Director, subject to the approval of the Library Board, shall endeavor to <br />schedule five (5) consecutive eight-hour work days. The Library Director, with notification to the <br />AFSCME Union, shall determine appropriate work shifts, specifying starting and ending times, <br />lunch periods, and scheduled days of rest. <br /> <br />B. In the Parks Department, Recreation Leaders, Recreation Supervisors, Ranger Supervisors, Park <br />Rangers, and Office staff may be assigned flexible shift work which includes work days and work <br />weeks that are in excess of the normally assigned work shift or work week. <br />
