Fulton Street Pedestrian Bicycle Corridor PAGE 82 OF 114 CONTRACT
FEDERAL AID # TAP-0420(026)
WO #3785 September 6, 2024

1
Joint sealant shall be used for transverse joints in paving. 2
3
Cleaning: Ensure that cracks are thoroughly clean, dry and free of all loose and foreign 4
material when filling with crack sealant material. Use a hot compressed air lance to dry 5
and warm the pavement surfaces within the crack immediately prior to filling a crack with 6
the sealant material. Do not overheat pavement. Do not use direct flame dryers. Routing 7
cracks is not required. 8
9
Sand Slurry: For cracks that are to be filled with sand slurry, thoroughly mix the 10
components and pour the mixture into the cracks until full. Add additional CSS -1 cationic 11
emulsified asphalt to the sand slurry as needed for workability to ensure the mixture will 12
completely fill the cracks. Strike off the sand slurry flush with the existing pavement 13
surface and allow the mixture to cure. Top off cracks that were not completely filled with 14
additional sand slurry. Do not place the HMA overlay until the slurry has fully cured. 15
16
The sand slurry shall consist of approximately 20 percent CSS -1 emulsified asphalt, 17
approximately 2 percent portland cement, water (if required), and the remainder clean 18
Class 1 or 2 fine aggregate per section 9 -03.1(2). The components shall be thoroughly 19
mixed and then poured into the cracks and joints until full. The following day, any cracks 20
or joints that are not completely filled shall be topped off with additional sand slurry. After 21
the sand slurry is placed, the filler shall be struck off flush with the existing pavement 22
surface and allowed to cure. The HMA overlay shall not be placed until the slurry has 23
fully cured. The requirements of Section 1 -06 will not apply to the portland cement and 24
sand used in the sand slurry. 25
26
In areas where HMA will be placed, use sand slurry to fill the cracks. 27
28
In areas where HMA will not be placed, fill the cracks as follows: 29
30
1. Cracks ¼ inch to 1 inch in width - fill with hot poured sealant. 31
2. Cracks greater than 1 inch in width – fill with sand slurry. 32
33
Hot Poured Sealant: For cracks that are to be filled with hot poured sealant, apply the 34
material in accordance with these requirements and the manufacturer’s 35
recommendations. Furnish a Type 1 Working Drawing of the manufacturer’s product 36
information and recommendations to the Engineer prior to the start of work, including the 37
manufacturer’s recommended heating time and temperatures, allowable storage time 38
and temperatures after initial heating, allowable reheating criteria, and application 39
temperature range. Confine hot poured sealant material within the crack. Clean any 40
overflow of sealant from the pavement surface. If, in the opinion of the Engineer, the 41
Contractor’s method of sealing the cracks with hot poured sealant results in an excessive 42
amount of material on the pavement surface, stop and correct the operation to eliminate 43
the excess material. 44
45
5-04.3(4)A2 Crack Sealing Areas Prior to Paving 46
In areas where HMA will be placed, use sand slurry to fill the cracks. 47
