PetroCard Site Response Plan
If a Spill Occurs
1 . Call For HELPI 911
Drivers are trained to:
2. Use Emergency Shut-off Switch -Generally, the best first act is to shut down the spill
supply.
3. Shut Down Operations—
• Stop all work in the spill area!
• Call 91111
• Prevent anyone from entering the
spill area.
4. Take Charge- Size up the problem, stop, take a second, and gather information.
• How much has been spilled?
• Where is it going?
• Who or what is in the way?
• Look for ignition sources and shut them down.
6. Barricade or Block Storm Drains—
• Dike pools and flow with absorbent and pads.
• Consider your available supply and prioritize placement
o To protect personnel
o To protect critical drainages.
6. Direct others away from the Spill Area.
7. Get Fire Extinguishers Ready- It is a good idea to get fire extinguishers out of their brackets
and place them in a handy place out of the spill area. If it is needed, you must be able to get to
it without crossing the spill.
8. Call your Supervisor- Fire Department units can always be turned back by radio if it is
determined they are not needed. The applicable rule is "Better Safe than Sorry."
9. In Case of Fire-Generally, diesel spills cannot be ignited by sparks or heat sources. However,
in case of fire never use water on combustible liquid fires as it may cause the flaming fuel to
float on the water and run to uninvolved areas. Withdraw to safety if the fire is beyond control.
10. Clean Up and Disposal -when the spill has been contained and ALL fire danger suppressed,
the Incident enters the clean-up phase.
11. Licensed Hazardous Waste Disposal -Spilled diesel and contaminated materials must be
disposed of in a proper manner. DO NOT simply throw used absorbents into the trash as this
violates the D.O.E. rule requiring the proper disposal of spilled oils in marked receptacles
provided at base facilities. Do not wash down spilled fuels.
11/17/2023
