3.0 BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
The BMPs are measures used to reduce or mitigate storm water pollution from industrial activities.BMPs are
a broad class of measures and may include processes, procedures, schedules of activities, and prohibition of
practices. Specific measures followed at this facility are discussed below.
3.1 Housekeeping
General good housekeeping measures are employed to minimize the potential for a release to the storm water
drainage system. Garbage containers are emptied on a weekly basis by Allied Waste Management Inc.
Garbage cans with cleanup waste are disposed of separately.
The site employs a vacuum sweeping company to remove dust and accumulated sediment monthly. The oil
water separators are inspected quarterly, and a vacuum disposal company is contracted to dispose of
accumulated oil on a quarterly basis.
3.2 Preventative Maintenance
All catch basins are cleaned when the depth of debris accumulates, and the debris surface will be maintained
at least 6 inches below the outlet pipe. The secondary containment vault is inspected daily,to ensure that the
rubber cover is effective at restricting water accumulation, and to ensure that at least 2,500-gallons of the
secondary containment volume is available for an emergency release. The operation and maintenance manual
for the oil stop valve is closed and all stormwater from the site is being collected in the secondary containment
vault. Water is being disposed off-site by Marine Vacuum Service(206)762-0240.
3.3 Spill Prevention and Emergency Cleanup
Employees are trained in hazardous materials management and storage requirements. Spill response
equipment and materials are readily accessible.A notification system has been established and a copy of the
IDPP is current and available at Nelson's main facility as identified in Table 4.
Table 4-Emergency Response Contacts
Incident Agency/Response Subcontractor Telephone Number
Fire City of Everett Fire Dept. 911
Release to Sewer City of Everett Public Utilities (425)257-8882
US Ecology (800)883-4672
Release to Soil Washington Department of Ecology (425)649-7000
Groundwater State Emergency Response Commission 911
Uncontrolled Release Slotta Design and Consulting (206)459-5775
