The project appears to include retaining walls that require engineering. Structural
calculation for the retaining walls appears to not be included in the submittal documents.Where
a structural design is performed per Section R301.1.3, structural drawings and calculations should
be prepared by a professional engineer licensed in the state of Washington; the drawings and
calculations should bear the seal and signature of the engineer. See RCW Sections 18.43.010,
18.43.020, and 18.43.070. IRC R404.4, IBC 1807.2
Response: Please see the attached page 2-5 for the retaining wall calculations. Per discussion with the
architect, the proposed site grade will be adjusted to allow 4 ft tall maximum concrete retaining wall.
2.The drawings should provide the design parameters for the design of the retaining walls. Note
that retaining walls supporting more than 6 feet of backfill should incorporate the additional
seismic lateral earth pressure. R106.1.1, IBC 1807.2.2
Response: Please refer to the detail 1 on sheet S-3. The active soil pressure is 35 pcf with vertical
surcharge of 50 psf. The maximum height for retaining soil is 4 feet therefore seismic lateral pressure
is not required.
3.It appears that soldier piles are specified on Sheet S-4. Calculations substantiating the design
should be submitted for review. Sheet S-0 should be updated to specify the required special
inspections per IBC Section 1705.7.
Response: Please refer to the detail 1 on sheet S-3, The soldier piles are not needed since the
maximum excavated soil height is 4 ft.
