The connection is outside the scope of this review.
The rack installer must verify that all connection points are securely connected to the posts for
proper load transfer, when the rack is reinstalled in Building 40-03. Figure 2 shows an
elevation view of the existing rack system.
•
400
6.9mfareatign :mow
'1
xa
Figure 2: Existing rack framing
There are two sets of storage racks in Rooms 261 and 264 (Building 40-31), as shown in
Figure 1. It is our understanding that both storage racks will be relocated to Building 40-03.
Sheet 1 M263a of the mechanical drawings indicates that the larger rack (plan north in
Figure 1)will be fully assembled in Building 40-03. Only one unit of the smaller rack(plan
south in Figure 1)will be relocated to Building 40-03. See Mechanical Sheets 1M263a and
1M264 for the above-described rack layout. Our review considered either full or partial
relocation of the smaller rack; the findings are not affected.
During the site visit, it was observed that the top shelf(third shelf) of the storage rack has
been modified to laterally brace and provide gravity support to a sprinkler pipe system. The
size of the sprinkler pipe was not measured as it was not accessible due to height limitation.
The modified section is approximately 2'-0" high and is mainly constructed from struts
material and strut brackets. The gravity and lateral load from the sprinkler system did not
appear to be significant; however, Reid Middleton has not reviewed the capacity of the
Reid iddleton
1.13
