C. Nailable Substrate: <br /> 1. Stair steps or changes in elevation of the substrate at cricket edges, shear straps, panel <br /> joints, etc., that are greater than '/4" shall be reinforced with 20 gauge sheet metal to <br /> provide a gradual transition and adequate support for the new roofing system. <br /> 2. Damaged panels in the substrate shall be replaced to match existing. All edges shall be <br /> fully supported and nailed a minimum of 6" on center with hot dipped or electro-galvanized <br /> 8d common smooth or ring shank nails. The field shall be nailed 12" on center over each <br /> stringer or structural member. <br /> 3. All roof penetrations, i.e., overflow drain pans, curbs, vents, etc., shall be properly <br /> supported from below the deck to prevent excessive deflection. Cross supports from <br /> stringer to stringer or purlin to purlin shall be installed adjacent to large openings for <br /> adequate support. <br /> 4. Boards shall not be warped and shall have a minimum of knot holes and cracks. Knot <br /> holes and cracks greater than '/4" shall be covered with sheet metal, nailed in place being <br /> careful that the metal is smoothly installed so the roofing felts will not be damaged. <br /> 3.02 JOB CONDITIONS: <br /> A. All existing work including the roofing membrane shall be properly protected from damage. The <br /> contractor shall protect the roofing membrane with minimum '/z inch thick plywood for storing <br /> material and temporary traffic surfaces, as necessary. Any damage to existing roof shall be <br /> repaired until replaced by the roofing contractor. <br /> B. When necessary, protect interior plant operations and personnel from debris, dust and saw <br /> dust with plastic sheeting or tarpaulins. <br /> C. Contractor shall be responsible for security when opening the building for roof projections <br /> and/or curbs. Proper and secure caps shall be installed at unfinished equipment curbs at the <br /> end of each day of work. <br /> D. Ground storage and work areas shall be confined to the areas designated by Owner. <br /> E. Any damage done to the Owner's property shall be replaced or restored to the original condition <br /> by the roofing contractor at his/her own expense. <br /> 3.03 PREPARATION OF SURFACE AND MATERIALS: <br /> A. Roof Deck Repairs: <br /> 1. Remove all roofing nails remaining from demolition. <br /> 2. Remove any deck nails that have backed out and re-nail within 2" of existing penetration. <br /> 3. Cover any holes where roof projections or penetrations have been removed. <br /> 4. Replace any damaged, deteriorated or moisture saturated panels. <br /> 5. Provide a minimum of 1/8" gap between panels to allow for expansion due to moisture. <br /> 3.04 INSTALLATION, GENERAL: <br /> A. Discard units of material with defects that impair quality of rough carpentry and that are too <br /> small to use with minimum number of joints or optimum joint arrangement. <br /> B. Perform work in accordance with industry standards, except as specified herein. <br /> C. Set rough carpentry to required levels and lines with members plumb, true to line, cut and fitted. <br /> D. Fit rough carpentry to other construction; scribe and cope as required for accurate fit. Correlate <br /> location of furring, nailers, blocking, grounds, and similar supports to allow attachment of other <br /> construction. <br /> E. Pressure-treated wood shall only be used where contacting fresh (wet)concrete or where <br /> exposed to the weather. <br /> F. Securely attach rough carpentry work to substrate by anchoring and fastening as indicated, <br /> complying with the following: <br /> 1. CABO NER-272 for power-driven staples, P-nails, and allied fasteners. <br /> 2.
