Currently there is an L-shaped corridor that serves a
series of offices and has existing Doors-A&B at either end (see drawing SD2.02).
Kaiser Permanente wants to separate this office area into two parts: a behavioral
health office area and an administration office area. This separation will create a 72-
foot corridor and a 47-foot corridor with new locked Cross -Corridor Door-C in-between
(see drawing SD2.01). This will make both corridors into dead ends. Per the IBC
Section 1020.4, Exception-2: In Type-B with an automatic sprinkler system the length
of the dead-end corridor shall not exceed 50-feet.
1. The 72-foot long corridor exceeds the maximum by 20-feet and is not allowed.
2. The 45-foot long corridor is allowed.
3. The common path 75-feet with sprinklers
4. New Door-C will have a panic device and exit sign on the 72-foot corridor side.
5. New Door-C will NOT have panic hardware or an exit sign on the 47-foot corridor
side but will have a lever handle.
The Kaiser Clinic is Type-B and is fully sprinklered throughout.
To resolve the 72-foot long dead-end corridor, we propose the new locked Door-C
have a "delayed egress" system that will permit exiting into the 45-foot long corridor.
The delayed egress door is allowed under both:
6. IBC 1010.1.9.7
7. NFPA 101 "life safety code" 7.2.1.6.1
The IBC states: Delayed egress locking systems shall be permitted to be installed on
doors serving any other occupancy except Group A, E and H in buildings equipped
throughout with an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 903.3.1.1 or
an approved automatic smoke or heat detection system in accordance with Section
907. The locking system shall be installed and operated in accordance with all of the
following:
1402 Third Ave, Suite 200 / Seattle, WA 98101 /T206652,0722/F206340,2266/www.salus.archi
