Geotechnical Engineering Report-Revised lrerracon
Kaiser Everett Medical Center Everett,Washington -- s--- y
December 18, 2019 Terracon Project No. 81195071 GeoReport
Existing Fill
As noted in Geotechnical Characterization, existing fill was potentially encountered to depths
ranging from about 3 to 8 feet. Support of pavements, on or above existing fill soils, is discussed
in this report. However, even with the recommended construction procedures, there is inherent
risk for the owner that compressible fill or unsuitable material, within or buried by the fill will, not
be discovered. This risk of unforeseen conditions cannot be eliminated without completely
removing the existing fill but can be reduced by following the recommendations contained in this
report. A Geotechnical Engineer can assist in identifying existing fill during construction.
If the owner elects to construct pavements on the existing fill, the following protocol should be
followed. Once the planned subgrade elevation has been reached the entire pavement area
should be proofrolled. Areas of soft or otherwise unsuitable material should be undercut and
replaced with either new structural fill or suitable, existing on-site materials.
Fill Material Types
Fill required to achieve design grade should be classified as structural fill and general fill.
Structural fill is material used below, or within 10 feet of structures, pavements or constructed
slopes. General fill is material used to achieve grade outside of these areas. Earthen materials
used for structural and general fill should meet the following material property requirements:
Fill Type Recommended Materials Acceptable Location for
Placement
9-03.9(1) Ballast
9-03.9(3) Crushed Surfacing Base Course
Beneath and adjacent to
Granular 9-03.12(1)A Gravel Backfill for Foundations Class A' structural slabs, foundations,
and pavement subgrades
9-03.14(1) Gravel Borrow
On-site Soils (i.e. Stratum 2, 3)
Section 9-03.14(3) Common Borrow' Grade filling, utility trench
General Fill backfill outside the building
On-site Soils (i.e. Stratum 1, 2, 3)2,3 foundation and apertures
Responsive ■ Resourceful ■ Reliable 7
