4.1.6 Lighting• <br />Intent: To ensure that site lighting contributes to the character of the site and does not disturb <br />adjacent residential areas producing off -site glare impacts to residential areas, either through <br />exterior shields or through optical design inside the fixture, so that the direction of light is <br />downward. <br />To ensure that site lighting contributes to the character of the site and does not disturb adjacent <br />residential areas. <br />Guidelines: <br />Lighting shall be provided within parking lots and along pedestrian walkways. <br />Lighting fixtures shall be limited to heights of 24 feet for parking lots and 18 feet for <br />pedestrian walkways. All lighting shall be shielded from producing off -site glare, either <br />through exterior shields or through optical design inside the fixture, so that the direction of <br />light is downward. <br />® Accent lighting should be used to highlight building/site entrances and special landscape <br />features. <br />Sidewalks and Street Trees: <br />Intent: To establish a consistent character for street right-of-ways and enhance the natural, <br />aesthetic and urban environment as well as improve pedestrian safety. <br />Guidelines: <br />• Minimum streetscape improvements are listed in Section 2 of Ordinance 2850-05. The <br />following guidelines provide additional information regarding the nature and intent of said <br />improvements. The Planning Director and City Engineer will have final review authority over <br />actual improvements installed. <br />• Street trees shall be planted between the curb and the walking path of the sidewalk. <br />• Large trees with overhanging canopies or branches are desirable. However, species of street <br />trees shall be of a type approved by the City. <br />• Street trees shall be a minimum of 2-1/2" caliper and shall be spaced no further apart than <br />25 feet. <br />• Street tree planting should consider the location of existing utilities, lighting and proposed <br />signs. <br />• Tree grates should be installed at the base of each street tree when needed. <br />4.1.9 Pedestrian Connections: <br />Intent: To create a network of safe and attractive linkages for pedestrians. <br />Guidelines: <br />Within parking lots, between a public right-of-way and building entrances, and between parking lots <br />and building entrances, clearly defined pedestrian connections should be provided. <br />• Pedestrian connections can be counted toward the amount of required landscaping. <br />• Pedestrian connections shall not be less than five feet wide. <br />• Pedestrian connections shall be clearly defined by at least two of the following: <br />
