2025 FEDERAL OVERLAY, W MUKILTEO BLVD – GLENWOOD AVE TO DOGWOOD DR
PAGE SP83 OF SP123 SPECIAL PROVISIONS
WORK ORDER #3842 April 15, 2025 FEDERAL AID# NHPP-2776(011)
Roadway cores for density may be obtained by either the Contracting Agency or the 1
Contractor in accordance with WSDOT SOP 734. The core diameter shall be 4-inches 2
minimum, unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. Roadway cores will be tested by 3
the Contracting Agency in accordance with WSDOT FOP for AASHTO T 166. 4
5
If the Contract includes the Bid item “Roadway Core”, the cores shall be obtained by the 6
Contractor in the presence of the Engineer on the same day the mix is placed and at 7
locations designated by the Engineer. If the Contract does not include the Bid item 8
“Roadway Core”, the Contracting Agency will obtain the cores. 9
10
For a lot in progress with a CPF less than 0.75, a new lot will begin at the Contractor’s 11
request after the Engineer is satisfied that material conforming to the Specifications can 12
be produced. 13
14
HMA mixture accepted by commercial evaluation and HMA constructed under conditions 15
other than those listed above shall be compacted on the basis of a test point evaluation 16
of the compaction train. The test point evaluation shall be performed in accordance with 17
instructions from the Engineer. The number of passes with an approved compaction 18
train, required to attain the maximum test point density, shall be used on all subsequent 19
paving. 20
21
HMA for preleveling shall be thoroughly compacted. HMA that is used for preleveling 22
wheel rutting shall be compacted with a pneumatic tire roller unless otherwise approved 23
by the Engineer. 24
25
Test Results 26
For a sublot that has been tested with a nuclear density gauge that did not meet the 27
minimum of 92 percent of the reference maximum density in a compaction lot with a CPF 28
below 1.00 and thus subject to a price reduction or rejection, the Contractor may request 29
that a core be used for determination of the relative density of the sublot. The relative 30
density of the core will replace the relative density determined by the nuclear density 31
gauge for the sublot and will be used for calculation of the CPF and acceptance of HMA 32
compaction lot. 33
34
When cores are taken by the Contracting Agency at the request of the Contractor, they 35
shall be requested by noon of the next workday after the test results for the sublot have 36
been provided or made available to the Contractor. Core locations shall be outside of 37
wheel paths and as determined by the Engineer. Traffic control shall be provided by the 38
Contractor as requested by the Engineer. Failure by the Contractor to provide the 39
requested traffic control will result in forfeiture of the request for cores. When the CPF for 40
the lot based on the results of the HMA cores is less than 1.00, the cost for the coring will 41
be deducted from any monies due or that may become due the Contractor under the 42
Contract at the rate of $200 per core and the Contractor shall pay for the cost of the 43
traffic control. 44
45
5-04.3(10)A HMA Compaction – General Compaction Requirements 46
Compaction shall take place when the mixture is in the proper condition so that no undue 47
displacement, cracking, or shoving occurs. Areas inaccessible to large compaction 48
