Exposed fire walls visible from a street or open space shall have material, color, 1 <br />and/or textural changes, as approved by the department, which adds visual interest to the wall. 2 <br />F. Exterior Building Materials. 3 <br />1. Exterior insulatfng finishing systems (EIFS) are prohibited on the ground floor of front and 4 <br />side street (corner) facades. 5 <br />2. EIFS, where employed, shall be trimmed in wood, masonry, or other approved materials, and 6 <br />shall be sheltered from weather by roof overhangs or other methods. 7 <br />3. Exposed standard and/or fluted concrete masonry units (CMUs) are prohibited above the 8 <br />basement level on front and side street (corner) facades. 9 <br />4. Exposed CMUs employed at the ground level or higher on front and corner side facades shall 10 <br />be split, rock- or ground-faced. 11 <br />5. Metal siding shall have visible corner moldings and trim, and shall incorporate masonry or 12 <br />other similar durable materials at the ground level. 13 <br />6. Prohibited Materials. The following materials may not be used on any exterior surface which 14 <br />is visible from any area beyond the subject property: 15 <br />a. Mirrored glass and other highly reflectfve materials. 16 <br />b. Corrugated fiberglass. 17 <br />c. Chain link fencing, except for temporary purposes, such as during constructfon. 18 <br />d. Textured or scored plywood, including T-111 or similar plywood, and sheet 19 <br />pressboard. 20 <br />7. Exterior metal surfaces shall be protected from corrosion and leaching by at least one of the 21 <br />following: 22 <br />(1) Paintfng or other impermeable coatfng; and/or 23 <br />(2) Metallurgical propertfes. 24 <br />G. Street Corner Buildings. Corner sites, in additfon to other design elements required by this code, 25 <br />shall employ corner building artfculatfons such as rounded or chamfered corners, prominent corner 26 <br />facing building entrances, public plazas, or other distfnctfve corner treatments as approved by the 27 <br />planning director. Buildings on corner lots with at least two elevatfons facing public rights-of-way a 28 <br />should emphasize their facades through the inclusion of prominent and visually engaging design 29 <br />features. 30 <br />1. Buildings located on corner lots shall incorporate two or more of the following features: 31 <br />a. Cropped building corner with a special entry feature such as a covered porch or 32 <br />overhang; entrances should be oriented at a 45 degree angle to encourage pedestrian 33 <br />access from both the principal street and secondary street. 34 <br />b. Distfnctfve facade artfculatfons such as cantflevers, overhangs, and turrets; 35
