I
October 22, 2007
Project No. T-5922-I
The wall design assumes subgrade preparation and placement and compaction of structural liII is in accordance
with the recommendations presented in Section 5.2 of this report. Structural Fill used in the reinforced zone of
the MSE walls should consist of a granular mineral soil containing no more than 30 percent fines (silt and clay
size particles). Based on the results of our study, we expect that some of the site soils will meet this gradational
requirement.
I
5.8 Drainage
I
Surface
Final exterior grades should promote free and positive drainage away from the buildings at all times. Water must
not be allowed to pond or collect adjacent to foundations or within the immediate building area. We recommend
providing a gradient of at least three percent for a minimum distance of ten feet from the building perimeter,
except in paved locations. In paved locations, a minimum gradient of one percent should be provided, unless
provisions are included for collection and disposal of surface water adjacent to the structure.
Surface water must not be allowed to flow in an uncontrolled or concentrated manner over the steep slope.
Surface water should be directed away from the slope face to a point of collection and controlled discharge. If
site grades do not allow for directing surface water away from the slope, water should be collected and tightlined
down the slope in a controlled manner.
Subsurface
We recommend installing a continuous drain along the outside lower edge of the perimeter building foundations.
The foundation drains should be tightlined to an approved point of controlled discharge independent of the roof
drain system. Subsurface drains must be laid with a gradient sufficient to promote positive flow to the point of
discharge. All drains should be provided with cleanouts at easily accessible locations. These cleanouts should
be serviced at least once every year.
5.9 Utilities
111 Utility pipes should be bedded and backfilled in accordance with American Public Works Associates(APWA)or
local jurisdictional requirements. As a minimum, trench backfill should be placed and compacted as structural
fill as described in Section 5.2 of this report. As noted, most inorganic soils excavated on the site should be
suitable for use as backfill material when properly moisture conditioned during dry weather conditions.
However, if utility construction takes place during the wet winter months, it may be necessary to import suitable
wet weather till for utility trench backfilling.
I
Page No. 11
I
