Structural Design Associates
En ineerin Structures to Last
SDAAIO012
Three vertical braces are present in the attic. see Image 5. The purpose of these framing members
is unclear. The rafters which the braces are connected to show no signs of distress, are of the
same dimension and spacing as the other rafters, and appear to be of the same quality and age as
the other rafters. It is believed that these were installed to reduce the roof load on the exterior
wall as the cantilevered floor joists below have sustained significant water damage and were
poorly repaired, see Image 6. With these braces bearing on ceiling joists in the center of a room,
the roof load is still being supported by the exterior wall. It is believed they were installed
without the oversight of a design professional. The braces are not needed and may be removed
once the lower-level framing is replaced.
Please see attached plans for framing member replacements and verification of existing header
sizes and grades.
No destructive tests were conducted during this site visit. If during construction it is found that
any of the conditions differ from what has been expressed above.notify this office immediately
for a revision of the design. Please contact this office if you have any questions concerning this
letter.
Respectfully,
Chris Lalonde. E.I.T. Chris Covington, P.E.
y.
