The following general guidelines can be used for a
surcharge program:
• Surcharge fill height Two feet above finish floor elevation
• Surcharge duration Estimated 8 to 12 weeks
• Surcharge settlements Estimated 7 to 1,5 inches
Surcharge fill should extend beyond the limits of the building footprint a minimum of five feet.
Where surcharge fill is placed, settlement markers should be installed to monitor the fill-induced
settlements.
Preload Program
A preload program should be used where fill additions greater than four feet will be needed in
order to achieve final grades. The following general guidelines can be used for a preload
program:
• Preload fill height Finish floor elevation
• Preload duration Estimated'8 to 12 weeks
• Preload settlements Estimated 6 to 14 inches
Preload fill should extend beyond the limits of the building footprint a minimum of five feet.
Where preload fill is placed, settlement markers should be installed to monitor the fill-induced
settlements.
Settlement Markers
Settlement markers should be placed prior to beginning fill placement for either a surcharge or
preload program and are to be monitored daily during the fill placement. Following completion
of the surcharge or preload fill placement, readings should be acquired weekly until it is
determined. by ESNW that the estimated future settlement is within the range specified in the
previous sections. Based on the settlement data, supplemental recommendations for the
surcharge or preload program may be provided.
ESNW should be retained to implement and perform the surcharge or preload monitoring
program. To improve the accuracy of the settlement readings, the integrity of the markers
should be maintained. Damaged markers may compromise the settlement data, and would
require replacement as necessary.
Earth Solutions NW,LLC
