Shah Residence—Tree Strike
DEI January 23, 2025
ADIBBLE ENGINEERS INC
Lastly, DEI noted a minimum four interior trusses, two on the east side and two on the west side, which had
truss plates that became dislodged from the truss members(Photos#9-12).
In addition to the damaged framing on the interior, DEI also observed damage to the roof from the exterior.
Directly adjacent to the location where the tree impacted with the structure, DEI observed significant
deflection and warping of the roof and damage to the venting and outriggers(Photo#13-14).
Recommendations
DEI recommends replacing the entire overframing in like kind at the portion of the house where the tree had
made impact.Although not all rafters in the overframing were observed to be damaged at this time,
replacing the ridge beam will require removing the rafters.Any structurally undamaged rafters verified by
DEI may be reused.Additionally, the roof sheathing should be replaced in-kind where damage is present.
For the trusses with top chord damage, DEI recommends retrofitting with a sistered LSL(Laminated Strand
Lumber)member and installing a plywood gusset plate to strengthen the weakened area and redistribute
the load. The calculations for the project conditions are provided in the following sections. Please reference
SSK-2, SSK-3, and SSK-4 for the accompanying truss repair details.
For the exterior truss with a displaced web member, DEI recommends that the contractor replaces or repairs
in like kind the displaced member. If the displaced member has no damage, the contractor may return the
disconnected member, so it is plumbed to its original condition. DEI recommends that these exterior studs
be sheathed to the roof to provide a continuous lateral load path.
For trusses where the truss plates have been dislodged, DEI recommends that gusset plates be provided
with sufficient screws/nails to transfer the loads across the intersection points. As with the top chord damage
repairs, details and calculations for this will be provided in the structural drawing and calculations submitted
for permit.
ITEM#2: DAMAGED DRYWALL AND INTERIOR FINISHES
Observations
DEI reviewed varying levels of damage to the drywall and other finishes. The conditions reflect severe
drywall fractures. Drywall is a non-structural material, however, substantial cracking in drywall is an
indicator of possible concealed framing damage. The following damage was observed. DEI recommends
that the drywall be removed in the areas listed below to fully reveal the extent of structural damage.
Drywall damages as follows:
In the living room area adjacent to the fireplace
In the hallway leading to the room where the tree strike occurred
• In the hallway leading to the front door
Recommendations
DEI recommends the contractor remove the drywall at these locations to verify if any structural damage has
occurred. If any damage is found, contact DEI for repair recommendations.
PAGE 2OF7
