Fill for units and the one foot zone behind the units shall meet the requirements of
Section 9-03.12(4) for gravel backfill for drains except that 100 percent shall pass
the 3/4" square sieve.

6-20.3 Construction Requirements

Since a majority of this work will be performed immediately adjacent to improved private
property, the Contractor shall complete the work in a timely fashion and shall grade and
clean up the areas disturbed by such work at the completion of the backfilling even
though subsequent work may be performed in these areas later in the project.

Contractor shall excavate to the lines and grades shown on the details and plans. Over
excavation shall not be paid for and replacement with compacted fill and/or wall system
components will be required at Contractor's expense. Contractor shall be careful not to
disturb embankment materials beyond lines shown.

Foundation Soil Preparation:

Foundation soil shall be excavated as required for footing dimensions shown on
the construction drawings or as directed by the Engineer. The bottom wall
course(s) shall be embedded a minimum of one inch per each eight inches of wall
height.

Foundation soil shall be examined by the Engineer to assure that the actual
foundation soil strength meets or exceeds assumed design strength. Soils not
meeting required strength shall be removed and replaced with gravel borrow
compacted to 95 percent of maximum density.

Unit Installation:

First course of concrete wall units shall be placed on the base-leveling pad. The
units shall be checked for level and alignment in all directions and insure all units
are in full contact with the base and properly sealed. The first course is the most
important to insure accurate and acceptable results.

Units are placed side by side for full length of wall alignment. Do not leave gaps
between adjacent units. Alignment may be accomplished by means of a string line
or offset from base line.

Install fiberglass-connecting pins and fill all voids in units with unit fill material.

Sweep all excess material from top of units and install next course. Insure each
course is completely unit filled, backfilled, and compacted prior to proceeding to
next course.

Lay up each course insuring that pins protrude into adjoining courses above a
minimum of one inch. Two pins are required per unit. Pull each unit forward, away
from the embankment, against pins in the previous course and backfill as the
course is completed. Repeat procedure to the extent of wall height.

HAWTHORNE ELEMENTARY
SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL
FED AID#SRTS-0420(021); COE#3540 SP-75 March 16,2016
