2.1.7 Element 7: Protect Drain Inlets
Describe how you will protect all operable storm drain inlets so that stormwater runoff does not
enter the stormwater conveyance system.
Describe how you will remove sediment that enters the stormwater conveyance system (i.e.,
filtration, treatment, etc.).
Keep in mind inlet protection may function well for coarse sediment but is less effective in
filtering finer particles and dissolved constituents. Inlet protection is the last component of a
treatment train and protection of drain inlets include additional sediment and erosion control
measures. Inlet protection devices will be cleaned (or removed and replaced), when sediment
has filled the device by one third (1/3) or as specified by the manufacturer.
Inlets will be inspected weekly at a minimum and daily during storm events.
List and describe BMPs:
All operable storm drain inlets shall be protected to prevent unfiltered or untreated water from
entering the storm drainage conveyance system. Storm drain inlet protection utilizing catch
basin inserts and fabric filter shall be serviced and maintained. Storm drain inlet protection
(BMP C220) will be implemented for all drainage inlets that could potentially be impacted by
sediment laden runoff on or near the project site. Straw wattles may also be placed around
catch basins to prevent larger debris and sediment from entering the storm drain system. The
storm drain inlet at the south west pond will be plugged at the beginning of the project to keep
water from the pond entering the storm system. In the case of emergencies the catch basins in
the parking lot will be plugged with inflatable plugs or covered with hard lids and sealed to
prevent direct discharge downstream. The following inlet protection measures will be applied on
this project:
• Storm Drain Inlet Protection (BMP C220)
• Straw Wattles (BMP C235)
Installation Schedules:
Storm drain inlet protection will be installed at the beginning of the project on or around 5/22/15.
Inspection and Maintenance plan:
Catch basin inserts will be properly maintained within the construction limits. When sediment
reaches no more than six inches of accumulation they will be properly cleaned out and disposed
of. Refer to the TESC site plan (Appendix A) for a detailed description of the location of the
storm drain inlets to be protected. The plan is to use the storm drains as long as possible
during the construction process.
Responsible Staff:
Steve Roetemeyer with MidMountain Contractors will be the onsite CESCL to maintain.
Page 119
