111
1 Before any concrete is placed, the finishing machine shall be operated over the entire
I 2 length of the deck/slab to check screed deflection. Concrete placement may begin only
3 if the Engineer approves after this test.
4
5 Immediately before placing concrete, the Contractor shall check (and adjust if
I 6 necessary) all falsework and wedges to minimize settlement and deflection from the
7 added mass of the concrete deck/slab. The Contractor shall also install devices, such
8 as telltales, by which the Engineer can readily measure settlement and deflection.
I9
10 6-02.3(10)D3 Concrete Placement
11 The placement operation shall cover the full width of the bridge deck or the full width
I12
13 between construction joints. The Contractor shall locate any construction joint over a
beam or web that can support the deck/slab on either side of the joint. The joint shall not
14 occur over a pier unless the Plans permit. Each joint shall be formed vertically and in
I
15
16 true alignment. The Contractor shall not release falsework or wedges supporting bridge
deck placement sections on either side of a joint until each side has aged as these
17 Specifications require.
I 18
19 Placement of concrete for bridge decks and bridge approach slabs shall comply with
20 Section 6-02.3(6). In placing the concrete, the Contractor shall:
21
I
22 1. Place it (without segregation) against concrete placed earlier, as near as
23 possible to its final position, approximately to grade, and in shallow, closely
24 spaced piles;
I 25
26 2. Consolidate it around reinforcing steel by using vibrators before strike-off by
27 the finishing machine;
I 28
29 3. Not use vibrators to move concrete;
30
I
31
32 4. Not revibrate any concrete surface areas where workers have stopped prior to
screeding;
33
I 34 5. Remove any concrete splashed onto reinforcing steel in adjacent segments
35 before concreting them;
36
37 6. Maintain a slight excess of concrete in front of the screed across the entire
I 38 width of the placement operation;
39
40 7. Operate the finishing machine to create a surface that is true and ready for
I
41 final finish without overfinishing or bringing excessive amounts of mortar to the
42 surface; and
43
I
44
45 8. Leave a thin, even film of mortar on the concrete surface after the last pass of
the finishing machine pan.
46
I
47
48 Workers shall complete all post screeding operations without walking on the concrete.
This may require work bridges spanning the full width of the deck/slab.
49
50 After removing the screed supports, the Contractor shall fill the voids with concrete (not
51 mortar).
52
I
I AMENDMENTS TO THE 2014 STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS BOOK
Revised: 8/3/15
