Given the age and condition of the red alder to be removed, many of these trees would
likely fall naturally at some point in the near future. Removing the selected trees as
specified will mimic a natural process in a controlled manner, thereby avoiding property
damage or injuries to residents. Removing the selected trees in the prescribed manner
will maintain the existing canopy and provide both snags and downed large woody
debris for wildlife. Planting replacement species will minimize the risk of future hazard
trees and will help mitigate for temporal impacts.
Because the tree removal will mimic a natural, successional processes and mitigation
plantings will be provided, the direct, indirect, and cumulative impacts resultant from this
project will be negligible.
In addition to the tree trimming, to allow more light to reach the development, the
applicant is proposing to clear a 15,000 square foot area located to the southwest of
Units L, M, N, and O. The area proposed to be cleared is located within the
Environmentally Sensitive Tract 998, adjacent to southwest of Units L, M, N, and O.
Vegetation in this area is currently dominated by a dense stand of approximately five to
eight year-old sapling red alder. Apart from the concern of these trees shading the units,
the applicant is also concerned that, if allowed to continue to grow, these trees would
eventually turn into new hazard trees.
As mitigation for clearing the sapling red alder from the 15,000 square feet of area, the
applicant is proposing to restore the impacted area with low growing, native trees and
shrubs. This will serve to increase species diversity as well as minimize the potential for
erosion on the slope.
STREAM CLASSIFICATIONS - COWARDIN SYSTEM
According to the Cowardin System, as described in Classification of Wetlands and
Deepwater Habitats of the United States, the streams on the subject site are classified
as follows:
Glenwood Creek, Type Np Stream: Riverine, Upper Perennial, Streambed, Cobble -
gravel.
Unnamed Tributary, Type Ns Stream: Riverine, Intermittent, Streambed, Cobble -
g ravel .
Villas at Glenwood Terrace Habitat Assessment
October 10, 2011 / WRI # 11111
