Our first item will be approval of the minutes from the June 24, 2014 meeting. Are there any
comments or corrections?
Allan White noted one spelling correction. Neil Anderson moved to approve the minutes with that
correction. Bobby Olsen seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
Review of the Proposed Sign for the Challacombe and Fickle Building, 2727 Oakes Avenue
Jan Meston: This is an unusual situation. Our Zoning Code offers a Comprehensive Sign Design
Review Process for applicants who want a deviation from the sign standards in the Zoning Code. Since
the Challacombe and Fickle Building is on the Everett Register, it has been our director, Allan Giffen's,
determination that a request for a free-standing sign for that building could go through the
Comprehensive sign Design Review Process. According to the Zoning Code standards, a free-standing
sign is not allowed in the B-3 zone downtown. There are many such signs existing downtown, but they
mostly likely predate the current zoning standards.
But given the fact that the Challacombe and Fickle Building is on the Everett Register, Allan has
approved this sign request going through the design review process, and that the Historical Commission
should have a role in reviewing the sign proposal and making comments on the sign design to the
director. The Commission's comments will be incorporated into Comprehensive Sign Design Review
process. That process also includes notice to neighboring properties about the proposal. So this
application is coming before you for your comments on whether the design of the sign is appropriate for
this historic building.
Andy Hall: Thank you for coming tonight. I know if I weren't here tonight, you guys would have the
night off. I appreciate it.
\
