4
Washington Preservation Initiative
2003 Grant Application
1. Describe the desired outcome that would result from the
implementation of this proposal.
Consider the following items in developing the response:
• Who and how many will benefit?
• How do they benefit?
• How will your library service change and what is the desired improvement
as a result of implementation of this proposal?
• Other relevant factors specific to the situation
Review and Evaluation
This question worth 20 points. Reviewers will look for:
• Beneficial impact of the proposal on library operations
• Beneficial impact of the proposal on customers
• The types of change and how the level of benefit/service both to the
library and to customers changes
The Everett Public Library plans to preserve 126 nitrate panorama negatives
(most circa 1915) taken by the J. A. Juleen Studio. Started as a small bi-centennial project
in 1974, the collection now exceeds 20,000 images and includes glass, nitrate and
safety negatives, original and copy prints as well as early movie footage.
These are stored archivally, with attention given to security and climate control,
and, from the 1970s to the present, professional help has been sought in order to
prioritize preservation projects.
Three years ago we purchased CONTENTdm software (funded with an LSTA
grant) and this has allowed us to catalog and place much of this material on our
library website. This is an ongoing project. Like other library's using
CONTENTdm, we are anticipating the day when these collections will be a part of
WorldCat.
J. A. Juleen Studio Collection
(View the Juleen Digital Collection online at our website www.epls.orq )
EPL's largest single photo collection is the work of photographer J. A. Juleen. The
Juleen Studio was one of Everett's most important commercial studios, operating
Page 8 of 20
15
