1. Washington Preservation Initiative 4
2003 Grant Application
V
from the early 1900s to the 1950s, first in the hands of John Juleen and then after
his death in 1935, managed by his wife Lena Dalquist Juleen. Work done by this
studio includes important views of Everett and Snohomish County business and
industry; scenics and street scenes used for postcards; photos of the Tulalip Indian
reservation; photos taken following the 1910 Wellington Avalanche; Great
Northern Railroad views and more.
About 5,000 Juleen Studio images, (negatives and prints), were given to the
Everett Public Library in 1978 by retiring photographer Don Pringle. The earliest of
these views were captured on 5 x 7 glass plate negatives. Most items in this
collection, however, are 5 x 7, 8 x 10 and panorama format nitrate negatives.
There are 146 panoramas in the collection. They are all 6 '/2 " high and vary in
length from 18" to 4' in length. The library has only a small number of Juleen
postcards, although the collection contains numerous negatives that were used to
make them.
Most of the surviving work documents 1920s and '30s Everett and Snohomish
County. Other highlights of the collection include early views taken at the Tulalip
Indian Reservation; 1910 photos of the wreckage following the train avalanche at
Wellington, Washington; and views of equipment made by the Sumner Iron
Works.
IMPORTANCE OF THE JULEEN STUDIO PANORAMAS
Mos of the Juleen panoramas were taken circa 1915. Some were taken as early
as 1910 and one as late as 1942. All are important to Everett and Snohomish
County history. These images include about a dozen Everett city views; images of
the Everett Fire Department's rigs and crews; Trades Union groups at Everett's
Labor Day 1912; various Snohomish County farms; 1915 views of Everett Pulp
and Paper Company (the Lowell Paper Mill); a 1912 panorama of Machias,
Washington; views of the Everett waterfront; Evergreen Cemetery; the Monroe
Reformatory; the Tulalip waterfront in 1915; mountain peaks in the Monte Cristo
area; the Rucker Brothers Mill at Lake Stevens; various industries including
Weyerhaeuser and Soundview Paper Company; Spanish American War Veterans;
the Everett and Tacoma Motorcycle clubs; a Civilian Conservation Corps camp;
and a 1942 view of a recruit training class at Paine Field.
Views in this series are both historically significant and popular with the public.
Many have never been accessible since Everett Public Library obtained them.
Receiving this grant would insure their survival, and allow public access to this rich
collection of images.
2.
