Water Conservation Audit- Cocoon House
1
Introduction
A water audit was performed on December 10, 2003 for Cocoon House, a non-profit
organization. The purpose of the audit was to evaluate water use and identify water
conservation and cost savings opportunities. Two sites were audited, the Pine Street site
located at 2929 Pine Street and the Shelter site located at 2726 Cedar Street. A
representative from the Everett Public Works Department and a professional water
auditor met with the Cocoon House staff to discuss water use at the facility, tour both
buildings and, where possible, measure actual usage. Current efforts by the staff of
Cocoon House to minimize water usage at the two sites include fixing leaks, installing
2.5 gallon per minute aerators on some sinks, and installing some 1.6 gallon per flush
toilets. Most water using fixtures such as washing machines, toilets, faucets, and
showerheads were in good general condition. The Cedar Street Shelter building is
estimated to be over 80 years old and the Pine Street building was built about 10 years
ago.
Historical Water Use
Two years of water consumption at both of the Cocoon House sites is shown in the
following tables. Since the facilities are billed every other month, each period (P1, P2,
etc.) represents water use for a two-month period.
Cocoon House Pine Street site water use
Consumption (ccf)
P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P6 Total Avg
2002 75 92 91 71 78 89 496 83
2003 77 82 82 93 74 73 481 80
Based on the above data, 2002 water use at the Pine Street site averaged about 83
hundred cubic feet (ccf) per month. In 2003, it decreased by about 3 percent to a
monthly average of about 80 hundred cubic feet (ccf). This decrease may be explained
by faucets that were repaired in 2003. The occupancy rate for the Pine Street site is
estimated to average 16 residents every day, 15 staff Monday through Friday, and 3
staff always on site throughout the 24 hour day, 7 days a week.
10/11/2004 Page 1
61
