•
1 Water Conservation Audit- Cocoon House
Cocoon House Shelter Cedar Street site water use
Consumption (ccf)
P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P6 Total Avg
2002 48 55 51 55 42 77 328 55
2003 41 39 34 23 25 30 192 32
Based on the above data, 2002 water use at the Cedar Street Shelter site averaged
about 55 hundred cubic feet(ccf) per month. In 2003, it decreased by about 41 percent
to a monthly average of about 32 hundred cubic feet (ccf). This usage difference was
due to a metering problem. It was repaired in 2002 and the usage is back to an average
consumption amount. The Shelter site averages 5 residents and 3.25 staff.
Recommendations
While the Cocoon House has taken steps to reduce water consumption, it is
recommended that the staff track water use on a regular basis and investigate any
sudden, unexplained increases. While some increases can be attributed to changes in
occupancy, they can also be due to water leaks and other problems. The sooner leaks
or suspected problems are found, the sooner they can be corrected.
The audit identified five actions that will build on the facility's water conservation efforts:
• Replace all high volume toilets that use 3—3.5 gallons per flush with low volume
models that use 1.6 gallons per flush.
• Install low-flow 1 gallon per minute (gpm) aerators on all restroom faucets that
currently use 2 gallons per minute or greater.
• Replace all existing showerheads with models that use 2 gallons per minute.
• Replace all the washing machines with low water use models that use an
average of 24 gallons per load or less.
• Test all toilets for leaks every six months.
Recommended replacements:
Cedar Street Site Pine Street Site
Toilets 2 13
Aerators 3 14
Showerheads 2 13
Washing Machines 1 2
The payback period listed for each of these actions could be greatly reduced depending
on a potential rebate from the City of Everett. After determining the recommendations
that you would like to implement, please contact the City of Everett to apply for their
rebate program.
10/11/2004 Page 2
62
