DAVID L. NELSON AND ASSOCIATES, INC.
. Consulting Enginecring Geology
Januaiw 26, 1987
Project No. 0387
Page three
The implementation of these developments should control al! surface water, and
direct any accumulated waters into th? main drainge systems, away from the
ecology block '++ali' area. Initialiy, ue suggest that the fill soils presently
occurring behind the 'wall ' be removed to a distance 18" to 24" wide behind the
'wall ' , and replaced with suitable drainage gravel. This drainage blanket arF+a
should extena tu at least 12" from the surface, and be covered with a geotextile
(stabilizrtion/filtration fabric), prior to placer, ient of a surficial 12" of
on-site soils. Surface grading should be performed so that all surface water
flows back from the wall to the drainage collection areas. The surface area
should be vegetated with appropriate erosion resistant materials. Prior to 1:he
placement of the extentlon of the concrete driveway, the portion which occurs
above artificlal fill should be prepared tlrogh placement of granular, 'pit-run'
type soils. This should aid in minimizing post-construction settlements and
allow proper drainage. The pit-run should be well compacted into place. We
do not suggest excessive compaction within a distance of one times the wall
height from the inside wall face.
Absalutely r.o excessive wheel loads should be anticipated within the area of
artificial fill behind the 'wall' , since the 'wall' is not engineered to resist
lateral loads. This should include any dead loads or storage, which may create
excessive pressures against the 'wall ' area.
Additional Notes
We suggest the geotechnicai consultant be available to observe and reporc all
findings during the excavation and replacement phases of site earthwork. The
observations performed may influence opinions and recomnendations expressed
herein, since subsurface analysis and exploration •as not performed. We would
suggest that the observations include times uring earthwork and preparation
of the site, as well as the finish development, including drainage.
• Thank you for the opportunity to be of service. f you have any questions,
feel free to call on us at any time.
Sincerel ,
DAV .
