It is gencrally composeJ of light-brown to light-gray, wcll-sortcd, <br />fino-to-medium-grained sand. 'Ihe Gsperance Sand member may include lenses of thin silt or <br />coarse sand and small gravcl locally. In confined situations, the Gsperancc Sand soils ure <br />gencrally in dense to very dense state. '1'he Lsperance Sand deposits, howevcr, can subject mther <br />cusily to rainwash crosion and gullying, anJ may looscn up nnd slough to its ungle of repose <br />where they aze exposcd on slopes or cuts nnd devoid of vegetation cover. The Esperance Sand <br />soils arc yuitc permcable and are oRcn saturatcd at the basc �vhcre it is underlain by a impervio�u <br />practically impervious fine sandy sill to clayey silt deposit of the R'hidbcy formation. <br />'Ilic Whidbcy fomiation, nonnally undcrlying the Gsperancc Sand mcmbcr, is consistcd of non- <br />glacial rivcr Ilood-plain dcposits. It is composed of light-brown to gmy, finc-sandy silt to claycy <br />silt wit� occysional tinc gravcl. Thc Whidbcy fortnation is gencrally vcry stiff to hard in its <br />andisturbed nati��e statc. It is of extremely low pemicability and tends ro perch groundwnter. <br />Groundwatcr sccpagc nRcn cmcrges out of slopcs and cuts whcrc thc Whidbcy fortnation is <br />cxposed. When Uic secpage pressure is high in the wet ��intcr munths, the emerging groundwatcr <br />can croJe thc soils in and above thc secpage zonc of poor vcgetation cover, und causc the <br />ovcrlying soils to slough and collapsc. <br />SUIiSURFACF. CONDITIONS <br />Subsurface conditions ir the arca of thc pruposed new resiJcnce to be constrvGed on thc <br />northem lot wcre explored on June 13, 2006, with thrce test borings drilleJ with a portable drill <br />rig owncJ mid operated by CN Drilling. 'I'he npproximate locations of the test borings are sho�cn <br />on Platc 2- Sitc and Gxplorntion I.ocation Plan. The tcst borings wem drilled to depths from <br />1 I.5 to 21.5 fect. Soil samples obtaincd from the test borings wcre visually classified in general <br />accordance with l.Jnited Soil Classification Syslem, a copy of which is presented on Plate 3.
