Soils Criteria and Mapped Description
The WashinQton State Wetlands Identification and Delineation Manual, 1997 edition,
defines hydic soils as those that formed under conditions of saturation, flooding, or
ponding long enough during the growing season to develop anaerobic conditions in the
upper part. Field indicators are used for determining whether a given soil meets the
definition and criteria for hydric soils.
The soils underlyin this site are mapped in the Soil Survev of Snohomish Countv Area
Washinqton. 1983 edition as Alderwood•Everett gravelly sandy loams, 25 to 70 percent
slopes. Alderwood soils are described as moderately deep and moderately well
drained. The average annual precipitation is 40 inches. Permeability of the
Alderwood soil is moderately rapid above the hardpan and very slow thrcgh it.
Included in this soil unit are Ragnar, Indianola, McKenna, and Norma soils, antl 'erric
Medisaprists. McKenna and Norma soils and 7erric Medisaprists are listed on the
Snohomish County hydric soils list.
Hydrology Criteria
The WashinQton State Wetlands Identification and Delineation Manual, 1997 edition,
states that "areas which are seasonally inundated and/or saturated to the surface for
a c•,secutive number of days greater than or equal to 12.5% of the growing season
ar •• !lands, provided the soil and vegetation parameters are met. Areas inundated
or saturated between 5 and 12.5% of the growing season in most years may or may not
be wetlands. Areas saturated to the surface for less than 5% of the growing season
are non-wetlands." Field indicators are used for determining whether wetland
hydrology parameters are met.
BOUNDARY DEfERMINATION FINDINGS
Wetland
VeQetation: Red alder (Alnus rubrn, Fac) and Western red cedar (Thuja p(icvta, Fac)
dominate the overstory of the wetland. The understory is dominated by a thick stand
of salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis, Fac+►, ladyfern (Athyrium jtlix•(eminv, Fac), and
false lily-of-the-valley (Maianthemum dilntatum, Fac). The dominance of species
rated Facultative and wetter meets the utteria for hydrophytic vegetation.
Soils: The soils within the wetland were moist at the surface at the time of
inspection. Sampled soils were found to be black (10YR 2/1), and silt loam in texture.
The wetland area, as mappea, appears to satisfy the criteria for hydric soils.
Hydrology: Soils sampled in the wetland were moist with dark chromas, inferring the
presence of water at or near the surface for at least 12.5% of the growing season.
This satisfies wetland hydrology criteria.
Kiny Residence 4 WRI N06290
Critiral Area Study Rev. p2: April 13, 2007
I It,
