The Washinglon State Department of Health (DOH) cross connedion regulations require water
purveyors, such as Everett, to maintain safe drinking water by taking precautions to ensure that fire
protedion water in both commercial and residential sprinkler systems dces not backFlow into the public
system. In the past, single check vatves were considered as an adequate backFlow device for commercial
properties. However, DOH has determined that double check detedor assemblies (DCDA) are the
minimum acceptable backflow protedion device for commercial fire protection systems. Some
commercial buildings in Everett still have single check-valves installed, which now must be upgraded to a
DCDA for commercial fire services when new construction is planned that will affed fire services. This
additional protedion is necessary to adhere lo DOH regulations and ensure safe drinking water.
Sincerely,
 r.
Tim Markham, WQCO
Cross Connedion Specialist
cc: Permit Services Manager Paul McKee, Assistant Fire Marshal Jim Venturo, Utilities Records Manager
Verl Siy, Meg Haley
CITY OF EVERETT • 3200 Cedar Street • Everett, WA 98201 • (425) 257-8800 • Fax (425) 257-8882
