Kcmind orkcrs during subcontractor or safcty mcetings about proper storagc and handling of materials.
-2.1.2 BMP G.20 HANDLING OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS
Pctrolcum products are widely uscd during construction activities. These pollutants includc oEls, gasoline, diesel --
oil, kerosenc, lubricating oils, and grcase. 7'hcy are used as fuels and lubricants for vehicular operetions, pawcr
tools, and general equipment maintenancc. Most of these pollutants easily adhere to soil partides.
Thc following are guidelines for prcvcnting pollution from petroleum products on construction sites:
- Store peVoleum pruducts properly
- Adcquately mainein vehides and hcavy equipment
- Dispose of oil and oily wastes properly(call 1-800-RECYCLE)
- Retain oil contaminated sediment on-site through the use of erosion and sediment convol BMPs
Guidelines for storing petroleum products are as follows:
- Storc products in weather-resistant sheds wherc possible,or providc cover and wind protection around
storage arcas. Line storage areas with doublc layers of plastic sheeting or a similar matcrial. ;tegulariy
monitor nll storage sheds, dumpstcrs, or othcr storage facilities for lcaks and repair them as necessar.
- Geate impervious bertns around the perimeter of storage areas(the capaciry of bermed areas should bc
] 10 percent of the largest container or 100%of thecontamed volume, whichcver is¢reatest).
- Label all products clearly.
- Keep tanks off the ground.
.
- Securely fasten lids.
- Post information for procedures in case of spills. Persons trained in handling spills should be on-site or
on call at all times. Keep materials for cleamng up spills on-site easily availablc. Clcan up spills
irrmedietelv and dispose ofthe contaminated material properly.
- Specify a staging area for all vehicle maintenance activities. Locate this area away from all drainage
courses.
- Remind workors during subcontractor or safety meetings about proper storage and handling of matcrials.
42.13 BNII' C1.30 NUTRIENT APPLICATION AND CONTROL I
Inorganic nutrient pollution is most often caused by fertilizers uscd in revegetating graded areas. Proper soil- I
stabili7ation measures, sediment control, and stortnwater detention structures should be used to keep thesc
materials out of watenvays.
Nutrient pollution can bc minimizcd by working fertilizers and liming materials into the soil to depths of 4 to 6
inches, and by proper timing of the applicatioa Control of nutricnts can be achieved by applying thc required
quantity of fertiliur in more than one operation. Hydro-seeding produces more nuuient polluticn thsn
conventional seedbed preparation operations.
Use of fcrtilizers containing little or no phosphorus may be requircd by the Cih if thc devclopment is near
sensitivc water bodies, In any event, cam should be taken to use only the minimuni amount of phosphorus
needed, as determincd by soil tests or advice from the local Conservation District or Soil Conservation Servicc

4-'_-2
