7 he addition of lime can affect the pH (or acidiry)of runofT, µhich can adversely affect nearby sensitic surface
uaters. importation of topsoil is preferred over heavily liming and fertilizing cxposed subsoil.
4-2.1.4 B11'II' C1.40 SOLID WASTE IiANDLING AND DISPOSAL
Solid wastc is one of the major pollutants resulting from construction. It is gcncrated from trecs and shrubs
removed during land clearing and human and building waste during thc installation of s[ructures.
The following practices control and reducc solid waste on construction sitcs:
- Provide adequate disposal facilities on the construction sile.
- Rcmove and dispose of collected solidaste at authorized disposal areas.
- Label waste conteiners and locate thcm in a cocrcd arca. };ecp lid closed at all umcs.
- Salvage and recycic any uscful materials.
- Conveniently locate and maintain sani+aq•facilities.
- Selcctivelv rcmove trees and other beneficial vegetation.
4-2.15 BNII' C1.50 USE OF CHEMICALS/HAZARDOUS PRODUCTS DiJRING CONSTRUCTION
Many types of chemicals may be used during construction activities. These chemical pollutants include paints,
acids for cleaning masonry surfaces, cleaning solvents, asphalt products, soil additives used for stabiliation and
other purposes, concrcte•curing compounds, and many others. Thcsc matcrials can bc carried b}•scdiment and
runofl from construction sites.
A Icrge percentage of these pollutants can be effectively controlled through implementation of source control soil
_ erosion und sediment control practices. By using only thc rccommended amounu of these materials and applying
them in a proper manner, pollution can bc furthcr reduced. As in the case of other pollutants, good housekeeping
is thc mest important means of controlling pollution.
Thc corrcct method of disposal of wastcs var6es with the material. Wash•up waters from aatcr-based paints may
go into a sanitan sewer, but wastes from oil-based paints, cicaning solvents, thinners, and mincral spirits must bc
disposed of through a licensed waste managcment firm r trentment, storage and disposal company. Disposal of
concrcte products, additives, and curing compounds depends on the product. Infortnation is a•ailable from thc
local health depattment or the Haardous Substance Infortnation Hotlinc(1-800-633-7585).
Thc following arc guidelincs for managing haurdous producu:
- Buy and use only what is nceded. Storc,rc-use,give awa}•, recycle, or disposc of lefrovcrs safely.
- Read and follo•directions on the label. Haardous products may be labeled as an}one or morc of the
follcwing:
Danger Poisonous Volatile Combustiblc
Caustic Explosivc Warning Corrosive
Flnmmablc Caution
- Keep products in their original containers whenever possible. ]f the product must be transferred to
smaller containers, use the proper size funnel and avmd spills. Label all containers.
- Prevent labels from falling off duc toccathering by covering thc label with transparent tape. To re-label,
use a mctal tag attached to the container or use a stencil and sprapaint.
4-'-3
