The kit might
cccain appropriatcly lined drums, absorbent pads, and grattular or powdered materials for neutralizing
acids or alkaline liquids. Kits should be deploycd m a manner that allows rapid access and use by
employees. This plan shall be updated regularly.
42.2.10 BMP 51.90 VEGETATION MANAGEMENT/INTEGRATED PEST MANAGENiENT
As used in this DMP,pest is defined to mean any agent, wheiher insect, fungus. bacteria, or vegetation which
causes damage or is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unless otherwise noted, the term pesticide includes
those chemicals commonly known as pesticides, rodenticides, fungicides, ncmaticides, and hcrbicides.
Vegetation management includes minimizing the growKh of undesirable vegetation or encouraging the groµth of
desirable vegetation. Vcgetation management may include use of herbicides to gM rid of undesirahle vegetation,
pesticides to reduce pest infestations, or fertilizers to promote vegetative growth. These practices need to be
implemented in an intelligent, environmentally sound fashion.
Businesses who wish to use temporary or permanent seeding,or w:o intend to plant vegctation should refer to
the following BMPs found in Chapter 2, Erosion and Sediment Control:
BMP E I.10 Temporary Seeding
BMP E1.15 Mulching and Matting
BMP E1.20 Clear Plastic Covcring
BMP E 1.35 Permanent Seeding and Planting
BMP E1.40 Sodding
These B17Ps provicie infortnation on rass mixmms, tcmporary and pertnanent seeding, maintenance of a recently
planted arca,and fertilizer application rates.
INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT
lntegrated Pesttanagement(IPM) is a long-temi,ecologically based systems approach to controlling pest
populations. lt utilizes a needs assessment based on dccision-making criteria and maximizes reliance on natural
pest controls.
IPM has nvo fundamental aims. 'fhe first is to steer pesticide use away from prophylactic, broad spectrum use
towards optimized selective use, using thearious]PM components to guidr decision-making and achieve an
economically justitiable income. The second is to recognize that the non-ecunomic consequences of pest convol
(and not just pesticide use)may be hzrmful to the environment, and so pesticidc inpu[s should be rcduced and
natural conuols mauimiud m order to minimize the environmental side effects.
integrated control is a pest management system that utilizes all suitable techniques either to reduce pest
populations and maintam them at levels below those causing economic injuq, or to manipulate the populations
so that they are prevented from causing such injury.
The major components of IPM arc:
- Initial information eatherine: The pest andlor problem is identified. Informntion should be collected on
the biology of the pest and its management, and previous methods used to manage the pest in the area.
Records should be kept in some manner of omgmng activities.
- Monitorine: The plants or the site nre observcd for potcntial pest problcros at regular intervals. Each
monitoring system needs to be tailored to the particular situation, and ihe level of effort should be
appropriate to the amount of damac caused by the pest, the time available, and the skill level of the
person makine the inspcctions. _
4-''-1 A
