,

J-736-02
Page 3
The suitability of various soils for placement as structurat
fill depends largely on the fines content (soil finer than the
No. 20U mesh sieve) and the .noisture cont:nt t the timc of
placement. This was discussei further in our December 20, 1978
report (see pages 8 through 11). If fill is to be placed during
wet weather months, we recouenc'. importing a clean, well-graded
sand and gravel for use as structural fill.
Consideration of East Wall Footing
We understand the east wall line is planned to be located 15
feet west of the east propertp line and that the site grade is
presontly about 10 feet in e]evation abcve the adjacent east
proper`y. This would allow for a recoueRded fill slope of 1.5
H:1V trom t.op af slab to the ground at the property. However,
this situation woul.d require extending the f.00ting at least
some 3 to 4 feet below top of slab. We recoend that the footing
baFe be extended below the plane of a 2H:1V s;ope projected from
the outside bottom edge of r,he footing to the East property line.
In addition, a minimum k foot horizontal distanc should be
maintained between the bottom edge of the footing and the 1.5H:
1V f.ill slope to allow for adequate soil cover against the footing.
We wi11 include a detail depicting these recouendati.n's in our
forthcming report.
Drainage Considerationa
Because of the nature of L-he fill soils, drainage of svrface water
by infiltratian would be very slow. In our opinion, a w=11
desined storm water system with catch basins in lower elevation
areae would adequately handle surface runoff. We further recoun.end
that the exterior ground surface adjacent to the planned stxctuie
be adequately sloped away from the building so that ponding of.
water does not occur.
Recotmoendations for Addi.tional Services
We recorend Hart-Crowser f. Asaociates, Inc. be provided the
opportunity for a general review of final design and specifications.
It is also recotnended that we be rctained to provide continuing
geotechnic9l engineering services iuring the aite preparation and
faundation excavation phases of this work. This is to observe
compliance with the design concepta, specificatione or recoends-
tions and to allow design changes in the event that scbsurface
conditions differ from that anticipaCed prior to start of
conetruction.
