E. Placement and Compaction: Allowable thickness of}ill Iifts wfll depend on the materlal
type and compaction equipment used. In no case place backfill and flll mate►ials in
layers more than 8 inches in loose depth for material compacted by heavy compaction
equipment, and more than 4 fnches fn loose depth for material compacted by hand-
operated tampers
1. Before compaction, moisten or aerate each layer as necessary to provide the
optimum moisture content.
2. Compact each layer to required percentage of maximum dry density or relat(ve dry
density for each area classiflcation.
3. Do not place backflll or flll material on suKaces muddy, frozen, or conta(ning frost or
ice.
4. Place backftll and fill materi3s in such a manner as to prevent wedging adion of
backfill against structures.
3.03 COMPACTION
A. General: Control sofl compactfon during constructlon provfding minimum percentage of
density specifled for each area.
B. Percentage oi Maxir, ium Density Requirements: Compact soil to not less than the
following percentages o+ maximum dry density detertnined in accordance with ASTM
D 1557 ("MODIFIED Proctor"):
1. Structures: Compact top 12 Inches of subgrade where exposed, and each ayer of
backflll or fili material to 95 percent of maximum dry density.
2. Lawn or Unpaved Areas: Compact top 12 inchos of subgrade and each layer of
backfill or ffll material to 85 percent of maximum dry density.
C. Moisture Control: Where subgrade or layer of sofl material must be moisture
condltioned before compaction, unifortnly apply wter to surtace of subgrade, or layer of
soil mateial. Prevent free water appearing on surtace during or subsequent to
compaction operatfons.
1. Remove and replace, or scaify and air dry, soil matelal too wet to permit
compacdon to specified density.
2. Soil material removed becau.e ft fs too wet to pertnit compaction may be stockpiled
or spread and allowed to dry. Assist drying by discfng, harrowing or pulverizing until
mofsture content is reduced to a satisfactcry value.
June 11, 2001 02300-5
