Location by stalion,lreck designation,and rail.
b. Date and lime.
c. Reil weight and section,mill brand,year and rr.mth rolled,and heat number otthe end
rails in each CWR string.
d. Lenglh of CWR string in feet.
e. Air temperaWre, rail temperature,and epproximate weather conditions.
f. Reil end gap lo nearest 1118 inch.
g Adjuslments applied to obtain zero thertnal stress.
2. Delermine rail temperature by means of AREMA standard rail thermometers as specified in
Chapler 5, Par16, of the AREMA Manual.
a. Plece two rail ihermometers on lhe shaded side of the rail bese nexl to the web and
leave in place until no changes in lhe readings are detected, but no less lhen ten
minutes.
b. Take the average ot the two temperature readings al the time o1 edjusting the gap
between rail ends.
3. If the rail temperature deviates from the specified zero thertnal stress ranpe, laslening or
anchoring of rail shall cease until lhe rail temperalure returns to within lhe specified range
and the rail hes been vibre;ed to relax localized stress build-up.
D. Gap Dunng rail laying,determine lhe gap between CWR slrings and belween CWR and boRed rail
by using the equa6on
G = (t-T)LK+O
Where.
G = Rail gap m mches.
t = zero thermal stress temperature in degrees F:
T= Average actual rad temperalure at time of laying in degrees F ,
l= One-half the sum oi lengths of CWR string being I.:id and the preceding CWR siring,
K = CoeHicien' if lhermal expansion for rail steel(OA00078 inch per tool per degree F.); and;
 = Rail gap asequired by manufadurers oi field weld kit in inches For bonded insulated
joints 4 equals the end post thickness.
[ Dutchman. Insert a dutchman at the lime lhe raiis being laid to prevent damage to the rail ends
during rail laying,ballasting,and olher operalions requiring passage otorntrack equipment over Ihe
rail jomts.
1. The dutchman, equal m length lo G minus 1l2 inch where G is determmed by Ihe formula in
the precedmg paragreph, shall be inserted afler the rail has been laid, except thal no
dutchman shall be inserted il the computed rail gap G is less than 1-1/2 inches
Peimit Sel 34 i t 10- 8
September 23. 2011
