PnEING EVERETT SECTION 34 11 16
NEW RAII SPUR VJELDING OF RAIL
VJORK OROER 10305
2. Radiagraphic Test: The tesl samples for pressure weld and Ihermite welda shell be
radiographically tesled in eccordance with ASTM : 142, 'Controlling Quality ol
Radiographic Testing.'
a. The radiographic lesta shell detect flaws in welds wilh suHicient detail to establiah
the ability of lhe weld to meet lhe requiremenla speced herein. II a defective
weld is detected, lhe welding procedure shall be madified and lhe tesls repeated.
b. At least four areas ol each weld shall be rediographed: the head, lhe web, and
each side of the base. The presence of any cracka or voids shall be cause for
rejection.
c. Each radiographic film ahell be identified, through the use o1 numbers and letters,
t show lhe Contract Number, the Rail identity, the Date, Inspection Agency, and
the View. A letter u ceRcation shall be submitted with each film to Boeing
Construclion Maneger. The letter shali state the information given on the film and
whether lhe weld meets or tails to meel the requiremente specified herein.
d. Each weld shall have complele fusion with no evidence o1 suAace or internal
cracks or fiasures. In thermite welds, porosity or slag inclusion will be tolerated
provided lhet the largesl defecl doas not exceed 1/8 inch in any dimension and the
tolal area of all detects does not exceed 0.06 square inches.
e. Nondeslructive inspection of inetal welds by radiographic use ol nuclear by-
product materials ahall be In accordance with United States Nuclear Regulatory
Commission Rules and Regulations, Tille 10, Atomic Energy, PaA 20, 'Standards
for Protection Ageinat Radiation' Transportation, handling, and storage of
hazardous materials used in nondestruclive inspection o1 welds shell be peRormed
only by or under the supervision of e persan of proven experience and ebility
operating under a proper license.
f. The laboralory end procedure to be utilized and radiographic lesting shall be
submitted lo the Boeing Conslruction Mer.ager for approval.
3 Ultrasonic Test end Magnetic Perticle Test: The test samples for pressure end thermite
welds chall be ultrasonically tesled and tested using Ihe magnelic particle method.
Certified test reports shall be foiwardeA to Bceing Construction Menager tor review.
Acceptance shall be in accordance with AKicie 1.04E.
4 Dynamic Test for Sample Rail Welda One ot each type sample weld thet has passed the
radiographic and ultrasonic testing shall be subjecled to the tollowing dynemic testig
The test sample rail wetd shall be supported on 36-inch cenlers with the weld located
between eupparts as shown in Figure 02041-1, Repeated loads shall be applied wilh two
hydraulic rams F,pply loads to the rail allematively el Poinls A and B Each load shall
vary fron zero to 44,400 pounds in Ihe approximate shape of a sine curve Loads shell
be appl'ed for two million cycles Application of load at Point A and lhen at Poinl 8 shall
constiti te one cycle. Rail dellection shall be measured every 500,000 load cycles et
Poinl!,and recorded to the nearest 0 001 inch. loads shall be monitored with load cells
placed between each ram and the rail head. These load cells shal be calibrated prior to
comme uement of the test program.
a Ac;eptance Criteria: Afler 2,000.000 cycles, the rail weld Joint shail show no
evilence of failure by bending The deilection of Bie rail shall not exceed 0 065
inch during the test DeOection shall be measured after every 500.000 load cycles.
5 Slow Bend Tesl for Sample Rail Welds One of each type sample weld which has
passed the radiographic and ultrasoNc testing ehall be subJected to Ihe Slow Bend Tests
Permit Set 34 11 76-4
SeDtember 23, 2011
