i
fifringer DuiWing Materials Teeting&Consultfng,Inc.
November3.2005 050268
8.0 Conclusions and Recommendations
8.1 General Note
Dased on the subsurface conditions encountered, and the planned conswcdon, we conclude that
the site is suiwble for the pinnned development and that conventional shallow spread and
continuous wall footing foundntions are suiteble for support of the anticipated loads. Settlements
should not exceed tolerable limits if the design and conswction recommendations presented
below are followed. Our recommendations for site prcparation fill placement and foundation and
retaining wall design are outlined below.
8.2 E:cavations
1. Prior to any site work, all orgnnic soils should be stripped from the site and stockpiled for
later re-use in landscapcd arcas or disposed of off site.
2. At the building and tank locotions, stripping, and over-excavation if required, should
ertend beyond the building perimeter a distnnce of at least 3 feet.
3. Prior to pincing fills, the exposed subgrnde should be proofrolled under the inspection of
an MTC represcntetive and if nny other soft, pumping or otherwise unsuitable soils arc
encountered, they should be overexcnvnted and backfilled with compacled sWctural fill
as outlined below.
4. Permnnent cu► slopes should be graded no stceper that 1-1/2 horizontnl to 1 vertical
(I.5:1).
5. Pcrmanent cut slopes should be track-wsilked to help retnin topsoil and secd, covercd with
a laycr of topsoil and protected from erosion by pinnting with grass or ground cover.
6. Gxcnvated soils may be reused for sUuctural fill as outlined below.
8.3 Fill Quality, PlAcemeot and Compactlon
I. Imported structural fill should consist of 4 inch minus select, clean, granular soil with no
more lhnn 5% fines(-#200).
2. Swctural fill should be placed in layers of not more then 12 inches in thickness, at
moisture contcnts within three percent of optimum, and comppcted to a minimum densiry
of 95 percent of the maximum dry density as determincd by ASTM designation D-1557.
3. For suuctural fill below footings, the compacted backfill should extend outside the
perimcter of thc footing for a distance equal to the thickness of the fill beneath the bottom
of the footing.
4. Any excessivcly loose or soft spots or ereas thut do not meet the compaction
requircments that ure encountered in the footing subgrade will require over-excavation
and backfilling with structural fill.
5. Native fill used as structural fili should be near optimum moisture according to the
modired Proctor test method (ASTM D 1557) and determined by MTC. Soils not
mceting optimum moisture content should be moisture conditioned by wetting or drying
prior to plecement. Soil with a moishue content excceding 3% of opdmum should be
spmad in thin lifts or wind rows, aereted, end tumed over until it reaches near-optimum ` ,
g. ,Y
